Slamming the alarm
My ears shuddering in the predawn chill.
No. Are you crazy?
Then I remember
And chill means nothing
Scrabbling for boots
Fumble-fingered, trying for silence
Sleep, Mom. It's just the cat.
I wait anxiously
Until her snores resume.
Stumbling over rocks
Because the well-known path feels new today.
Damn these clumsy boots.
I flash a light
And pick my way to the shore.
Slowing my steps
Because I don't see you waiting
What if she's not here?
I look around,
See movement on the rocks.
Breathing? No chance.
My heart pounds in my too-tight chest.
Do I look all right?
I bite my lip
And watch you cross the sand.
Reaching for me
You're much braver than I am.
Don't screw this up now...
I take your hand
A universe of warmth in your palm.
Whispering to you
"I'm so glad you came."
Gold sky reflects my joy.
I turn with you
To watch the new day dawn.
Being together
First day of my true life.
How did I not know?
I wish upon Earth's star
For mornings just like this.
Laughing, you squeeze
Your fingers pressing against mine.
How do hearts hold all this?
"Be here again tomorrow?"
you ask as the world turns to light.
Turning to you
I dare to touch your cheek
Why am I shaking?
There's only one answer to that.
"Absolutely. And the next day. I promise."

It had been a very long night. Miri gripped her lover’s hand as they gazed into the rising sun, and the beginning of a new day. The beginning of so much more, and she hoped that Terry was of the same mind.
Miri had been startled when she awoke in the night, only to find the bed empty next to her, the sheets thrown back as if in realization of a mistake.
Miri had never set out to seduce her best friend of ten years, it just sort of happened. One moment they had been sitting together watching television and the next they were locked in an embrace, their lips meeting in an exploratory kiss. After that, everything had been a blur.
It had been the realization of a long-held fantasy for Miri, who had always looked on Terry as more than just a good friend. So many times she had had to fight off the urge to act on those feelings, but this time, it was Terry who had turned towards her with more than just a curious glint in her eyes.
Miri had searched the house, and not finding Terry, she panicked. It was three o’clock in the morning, and still black as pitch outside. Donning her shoes she had wandered out into the night in search of her, knowing so certainly that Terry had experienced a change of heart.
“Stupid,” Miri said to herself, accusingly. Was this going to cost her the closeness that she and Terry had for so long? A deep sense of dread crept over her as she walked along the shore of the small lake upon which her cottage was built. It had been in her family for years, and was a refuge from the bustle of city life.
She knew how much Terry loved it there, and that’s why they had made the two-hour drive the day before. Had she known this was going to happen, she would never have come.
In the waning moonlight, that danced lightly over the surface of the lake, a form emerged. Terry was sitting on a large rock, her hair falling all around her and her knees drawn up tight, her delicate chin resting on one. Miri tentatively approached her, trying not to disturb whatever thoughts were coursing through her friend’s mind. A misplaced footfall shook Terry from her reverie, and she turned towards Miri, an unreadable expression on her face.
Without a word said, Miri pulled up next to her, assuming the same pose. The eastern horizon was beginning to glow in deep blue, harkening the dawn of a new day.
“I’m sorry.” Miri had said after some minutes.
Terry turned towards her, and laid a hand on Miri’s shoulder. “Whatever for?”
“That shouldn’t have happened.” Miri sighed.
“I think it had to happen. Miri, this wasn’t just you, you know. Do you really think that I haven’t been feeling that same draw that you so obviously had towards me?” Terry dropped her legs, allowing them to hang over the side of the rock. Standing, she moved to put herself between Miri’s legs, pulling them so they fell around her. Gently, she held Miri’s cheeks in both hands and leaned down to place a loving kiss on her lips. “This was not a mistake, Miri. It was a miracle.”
Terry ran the backs of her fingers along Miri’s cheeks, wet with tears. Miri was lost for words, but the obvious joy in her countenance was more than enough to tell Terry she was elated.
The two talked, and kissed, and a bit more while the sun slowly climbed over the rim of the lake, eventually bathing them with its warmth. Standing, they walked to the edge of the water, their hands joined as they had been so many times before, but now that union was so much warmer, and meant so much more.
It was a new day, and it was brighter than the sun could make it alone.
