Book, possibly Young Adult, released in 1970s or early 1980s. Sort of a mystery about how someone trying to kill a male singer whose show starts out traditional and then he switches to a character wearing makeup, sort of like the band KISS. The plot to kill him is revealed when one his bandmates is killed instead during a concert. I thought the singer's alter ego was named Dr. Doom, but can't track down anything under that so far.
