Fantasy series written by a game coder.

This was a couple of years ago. The main protagonist is probably (author leaves hints) a demigod whose constantly fights against battle lust. He seems a nice guy. In one story he traveled to a different continent and fought a dragon for a sword she was guarding (her dad died doing this job and she took over) that became his traveling companion and she could shift into dragon form when needed. I think either he or his sword radiated destructive energy? Perhaps the sword helped prevent said energy from killing others. He had another sword he had won but this new sword was a "talking" sword that he and he dragon woman could hear via telepathy. He was traveling (different book?) on a train telling his student friends his travel tales. This group of students spun off into their own series of adventures. The bad guys of these stories were extremely powerful and were a family? They were from the continent he originated from.
