I read this in 2011-2013. The book was about two animals who lived together in a clay hut they'd built, and lived a very simple life. A storm came and some predatory animal they were very afraid of took shelter in their home, and despite being scared, they nursed it back to health. I believe that, then, this animal lead the two of them to wherever it was from, but I can't remember why or what happens past that.

The cover was very pretty and eye-catching, black and red, a design that looked like fire or smoke.

A sequel to the book was released the year I read it, but I never ended up reading the sequel. I remember it had a blue cover, and that the books were intended to be a trilogy.

The Red Wind by Isobelle Carmody? The series is called The Kingdom of the Lost and there seem to be four books in total. The second book, The Cloud Road, has a blue cover.
