What are the possible reasons for her wanting to be connected to her family, physically and emotionally, despite knowing that what's she'd suffered was unacceptable?

You accept what you are born into.

Throughout the book, she mentions many stories and moments where even the worst members of her family have redeeming qualities. She also mentions that mental illness and injuries could play a role in their behavior: Dad being bipolar, Mom showing signs of possible brain damage after the first car accident, and Shawn having similar mental issues to Dad and (my assumption) possible CTE from the repeated head trauma from the fall and motorcycle accident.

I understand that it may be foreign to many that anyone could still love someone that’s abused them for any reason. Just keep in mind that she’s not exactly forcing a connection. I think she simply wants to not shut the door completely, while understanding that it will be on her terms, not theirs, that they’ll reconnect.
