Middle Grade Dystopian. Starts off with main character robbing someone else. People can't leave the island because murder orbs hunt you down. Energy waves cause unnatural changes (e.g., skin turns to glass, can't breathe w/o oxygen). Read 2015-2016.

I read the book around my 5th or 6th grade year which was 2015 or 2016. The book is about an island where you cant leave. If you try to leave the island murder orbs hunt you down and kill you. The reason people want off this island is because of all these waves of unknown energy that changes things in unnatural ways. Like your skin turning to glass, or you not being able to breath correctly for the rest of your life. There are periodic times within the book where it switches away from the main character to this other man ( who I cant remember much about). I wish I could remember more but I did read it a long time ago and I didnt even finish the book. Any help is appreciated! Also sorry if I got the genre wrong.

No I looked up Nil and it isn’t the book I’m thinking of but I can see why you would think that. And I couldn’t find it in the Middle School Dystopian section.

Was the main character male or female?

They were middle school age?

I can’t 100% remember there exact age but she was female had a oxygen mask on all the time because of previously mentioned wave thing, and was around 14-19 year old.

If she was high school age, this could be YA, not middle grade fiction.

Do you remember if there was any romance?

There was another girl that she cared about and she was always with (not like dating). But I don’t think there was any romance. I’ll try checking the YA section though.
