Ok so I remember very few details about this book but I know for a fact that this character (i don't remember if they are male or female) went to a local market place at the beggining and was eating a sweet treat - either cake or a biscuit etc and as they were walking home there was an attack and their house was hit and her family died inside. I beleieve the character was with a younger sibling when it happened. Having lost their entire family to this violence they end up joining a group of underground rebels who are all kids as well!

Everything else is super hazy but it is possible that there was also a wall around the town and they may have gone on a boat? I'm sorry it's so vague but I'm desperate to remeber this book

I'm 99% sure it was not an NZ book - I could be wrong but i didn't read much NZ stuff to be perfectly honest

Who or what are the rebel kids fighting against? Are they all orphans during wartime?

Thank you so much - shadows of sherwood is defintely heading in the right direction! It's that kind of feel of book. I believe the rebel kids are fighting against a controlling government that have their city walled off - they spend alot of time in tunnels underground. And yes the house was bombed :)

Have you tried the renegades marissa meyer series? it has children with super powers does that fit?
