My partner read a book about soccer when he was in middle school, probably somewhere between 1995-1998. The main character was the star soccer player until a new “phenom” came along - he remembers the author using that word specifically - and the main character ran into some relationship problems, as well. He purchased the book at the Scholastic Book Fair but cannot remember the title.
