Tipp is entertaining and its impressive he has kept all that energy and positivity.
Kiva and her need to continue to be the Warden's informant in order to stay alive. I get that he wants to use her for knowledge but it would still seem a waste to lose a good healer even if she cannot provide him all the intel he wants. How did her family escape though? Weren't they all captured together?
Curious too what Jaren did to get himself in here and why he was covered in so much blood. (hide spoiler)]

They must have had some kind of informant inside to know she is the healer and sees the incoming prisoners first. (hide spoiler)]

This reminds me of a book I read as a kid. I think it was called gladiator boy. I’m pretty sure the main character in that had to survive a bunch of trials to earn his freedom after he was captured and imprisoned. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 27 (view spoiler)[ The relationship between Kiva and Jaren is cute at least even if his adoration of her came kind of from nothing and he just wouldn't leave. They are sweet together so I'll take it.
Knew somebody had to be using a poison of some kind, should've realized it was Nergel who was getting it from somewhere. Explains why there is no commonality between those who get sick and why no guards had caught it.
Learning about Kiva and her family and their communication through notes from the stablemaster was neat. Impressive that Kiva held onto the hope her family was coming for so long. I don't blame her for being upset with them now. She's realized she is going to have to save herself since nobody else is coming.
The trials have been neat, still wonder what the royal's real motives were for saving Kiva. Why stop her from breaking in the air trial and why give her that medallion. Also who's medallion was it really?
About to start the water trial, I don't know why Kiva was so sure it would be the aquifer. That was never going to be dramatic enough. The abandoned and flooded quarry makes much more sense.
I like Mot the apothecary and morgue man! He is definitely a little too fascinated with death and how it happens but he's interesting and intelligent also.
Naari I still don't understand why she is helping Kiva and Jaren like she is. Shouldn't this be putting her at risk? Why hasn't she been moved away from the infirmary? What happened to her hand and how is that prosthetic so close to real? What are her motives? I find myself liking the character but I just want so much more information about her!
Tipp is still an adorable kid. Seeing him get sick was heart wrenching even though I was almost certain he wouldn't die. Kiva not looking for the rash sooner seemed like a mistake though as a healer. (hide spoiler)]

Not sure how to feel about Kiva heading to the capitol with Jaren to take over. After everything he has done for her, feels like more conversations could be useful. You'd think they could find a common ground somewhere and save a lot of lives. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ This has been pretty exciting so far. I do like the relationships between all the characters. I’m still betting on Naari having been sent in by the rebels to help the people inside. It may have even been the plan to get Tilda caught and sent in just after Naari.
It seems like nobody is really in control of where the guards work or what they’re doing. The warden seems to just let em do what they want as long as the prisoners are all where they need to be.
I would also like to know the real motive of the royals. There’s definitely more to it then the prince finding Kiva attractive. I can’t figure out that link.
I didn’t predict a poison as the illness happened before. Surely Kiva’s dad would’ve smelled the poison like Kiva did. Unless he isn’t particularly innocent and was behind the poison. That could be why it stopped shortly after his death. Someone skilled would’ve had to make the liquid. He may have poisoned himself at the end out of guilt.
I really want to know more about Tilda. I wouldn’t mind more information of Jaren or Naari’s back story either. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ the last paragraph or so felt a little out of place. There’d been no indication so far that she’d want to take over, especially with her and Jaren’s relationship. I think you’re right that some kind of arrangement to help everyone would be better.
I’m really interested to see where the next book goes. I enjoyed this one a lot. I was surprised at both Jaren and Kiva’s identities. Naari was obvious when you knew about Jaren.

Very true! Unless possibly the Prologue was about different characters... I need to know more about her past, we know Jaren and Tipp's, but not hers. The only thing that's bugging me so far (view spoiler)[the romance hints. If it was a female and it was clear that Kiva was straight, I'd prefer that. It's literally impossible for a straight MC to meet another straight person of the opposite gender at the start of a story and not have them fall in love. Typical YA (hide spoiler)]
