Quite a few years ago, I read a series about a girl who was secretly an author. She wrote books about vampires and the plots always came to her in dreams. She finds out she's been dreaming real events and threatening exposure of a vampire clan(I think? Might've been other creatures).
One detail I remember is that to get to their secret hideout/city/whatever, there was a black rose on an overgrown path showing the way. The author chick decides to investigate and finds out her dreams point to a real place and real events that happened in the vampire world.
I think at one point in the series she finds out she's not entirely human...? It was something along the lines of her mother being turned into a vampire while pregnant and then later becoming human again. I think the author chick was raised by her grandmother--somehow, mom isn't in the picture.
