I read this book when i was younger so probably 10 or 11 years ago for the first time.
Used a lot of period and written out accent and phonetics for slang or other language words
Has an older friend who is also a bear trapper with him
They save some cattle at some point i think

Moccasin Trail Pretty sure it's this one! The teenager who grew up with the Native Americans tries to teach his brother how to walk in moccasins and says you have to walk pigeon toed. This is a plot point later when they are trying to track down some horse thieves. Does that sound familiar?
