Sofia (sofloaf) Do you think the terms BIPOC and POC are good or racist?

message 2: by Sofia (new)

Sofia (sofloaf) I don't normally say much about this because there really isn't another word for non-white that's.... less racist, so I don't know what this would change.
But anyway.
I don't think we should be using the terms BIPOC and POC anymore, because why for the love of god are people grouping Black people with indigenous people with Asians and Hispanics, etc??? Their cultures are COMPLETELY different. I think non-white is actually a better term, because that way you're not saying they're all the same, you're saying they're not white. (You as in a general term, not a specific person.) /g

message 3: by Sofia (new)

Sofia (sofloaf) I personally get a bit offended when people refer to me offhandedly as POC or BIPOC, because my culture is NOT the same as Black culture. It's NOT the same as Hispanic culture. et cetera, et cetera. And I hate being put into generalized boxes. I think people mean well when they use these terms, but honestly, I think they shouldn't be used anymore. I've probably used POC a few times before I really started to think about its meaning, but I try to avoid using it now. /g

Michelle, The Book Critic (michellethebookcritic) a lot of ppl have said that saying poc is racist because it means "people of color" and white ppl would/should be included in that.

idk whether to agree with them because the ppl who've said that to me were white, you know?

either way, i agree. saying non-white is better, tho i wouldn't mind if ppl called me a poc :)

Wow. I don't understand their point. If they were included in POC, it would just mean... the entire human race. /g

yeah, i literally don't understand what they mean by that. if anyone knows about segregation in the US, they would understand that the word "color" has always been used for black ppl.

Anushka (bookish_swiftie) | 21 comments Maybe we should just say white, black, Asian, Hispanic, etc. I don't agree with the non-white because it makes it seem like white is the normal.

Yesss that makes sense /g

Jayna | 49 comments i honestly think it depends on the conversation you're having. while it is true that every single race and ethnicity is very different, there's also the fact that all races other than white are disadvantaged because of white people and so when you have a conversation about how white people are disadvantaging people of color you need a term for that... so POC is not a culture but even within cultures there are cultures but we still need terms to say "this is who i'm talking about". i'd say POC is a good term when talking about racism in certain aspects (but not culture) Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents

Sofia (sofloaf) Hmm that's a very interesting point!

message 11: by Lilly S (last edited Jun 16, 2021 09:22AM) (new)

Lilly S That's what I was thinking. When referring to racism, I can't list off every every single race there is because unfortunately white people are assholes to everyone who's not white, their race doesn't make a huge change in that /gen

message 12: by Sofia (new)

Sofia (sofloaf) @Lillyyy Yeah, now that I think about it, you're right.

message 13: by Lilly S (new)

Lilly S I can see that. Apologies, that's not how I meant it, sorry if it came off that way

I don't mean to speak for her, but I believe she meant that racist white people are assholes to everyone, not all white people. But yeah, it could be taken that way.

message 15: by Lilly S (new)

Lilly S yeah that was the intention :)

Yeah! You make a good point.
I think it pretty much depends on the context, sometimes you can use BIPOC, and sometimes you can name an individual race.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

bruh "racism" and "racist" dont have any meaning anymore
its been all thrown around again and again

and plus why do labels matter? say, if you're an american and you have extra alligiancies to the chinese r something, you arent really a good citizen.

poc and bipoc are stupid terms that need to be disgarded and tehy only exist to divide the population on race.

seriously, just call yourself something fully like "i am an american, no exceptions." be loyal to your country.

well here's the thing-- people of color experience oppression, so it's important to recognize that which is why there are labels to differentiate races. yes, in a perfect world race should not be a factor in anything, but since it very obviously is, we need to understand that and acknowledge it in order to move forward and end racism.

(and that's also why there can be single labels to describe all people that are not white)
idk if that makes sense but yeah
