Around 2012-14 I read a fiction series about a young alchemist. I believe he was living in a swamp/bog with someone else, and was outcast by his society. He learns that he is a powerful alchemist, and travels around on quests. I believe he is also the seventh son of a family, and I think that's why he was outcast?

All I remember for sure is that he is an alchemist, there was a scene where he used a glowing orb in a dark tunnel, and the title was a little bit long with the characters name in it. I believe his initials were S.S., but for the life of me I can't remember it!
