Or perhaps Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

OMG ACTUALLY! Is it Maximum Ride by James Patterson?

Halo and Hush both seem to be about actual Angels and is set in our world. I'll edit my post to make sure it's clear that it's not about actual Angels and it's a fantasy setting.

The main character in question is one of the former humans with wings... except he was born without wings, and I believe the other main character is a female human, who focuses on collecting and sell artefacts that have come from AboveTM. I believe the father of the first one is an Engineer, and he tried making his son a set of wings made out of metal, but they were too heavy and nearly killed him. His older brother is also a Helicopter Test Pilot, an extremely good flier and cocky flier who much prefers Helicopters over Planes, and actually has a debate over them at one point. I also believe he has a sobering discussion with a Goverment Lady who he clearly and obviously has a crush on, reflecting how that people in his profession tend to burn out young, and its hard to find a new job afterwards. Which will make it incredibly difficult to always be there for his brother.
I also remember some information about the ending, so spoilers below:
(view spoiler)[A zealot from bellow decides that the best thing to do is take a bunch of TNT and blow himself up at the top of the super-important elevator connecting the two races, which would probably destablize a city built on top of it and send it crashing to the ground. This leads to a frantic race where the main character has to captain an airship, because the captain has been hit with a reverse-bends by descending down to the ground too fast, in order to catch up with the elevator so they can yank him out and throw the zealot away from the elevator shaft before he blows himself up. I think there are sequels to this book, but I honestly don't know for sure, as I've never really read it again, as it was a library book. (I had a strong library phase around that time, and a lot of the books didn't really stick with me). Either way, I hope the good people of Goodreads can help me find this book!
