Bas | 554 comments Please combine the following entries (identical editions):

annob [on hiatus] (annob) | 4048 comments Hi, those are already combined (linked together). Perhaps you mean merge (delete one as an identical duplicate of the other)?

I see you added the book record with the cover image a few months ago. For them to be true duplicates, they need to have identical covers as well. Do you know where to find your cover for ISBN 9780571136100? Amazon's image for the ISBN is different than the cover you added.

Bas | 554 comments Dear annob, thanks for your attention.

The cover shows the one for my own personal Faber & Faber paperback; in the book itself it only gives the ISBN10, but this is the same as for the other entry. Furthermore, it mentions "First published in this edition in 1985".
So this made me conclude that these two editions are the same (although the other has no cover in Goodreads).

At that time I was relatively new to goodreads - and not fully aware of the possible requests to make ;) - so I decided to create a new edition, however, for obvious reasons I could not include the ISBN. In hindsight I realize that the more correct procedure would have been to ask for the cover to be added.

BTW: the same cover picture features also on the first (1984) edition hardcopy (ISBN13: 9780571133987), which would correspond to listing:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

see for example:

https://www.amazon.com/MACHINE-DREAMS...

If this is insufficient to justify merging the two paperback editions, could you at least make my added version an ACE, by adding the ISBN?

Secondly, you could perhaps add the cover to the hardcover first edition?

Thanks a lot!

Trying to establish which cover version of your ISBN is the newest, in order handle the ACE situation. Would it be possible that your book version might be the 1988 reprint edition of ISBN 0571136109? That would explain why your copy mentions "First published ... in 1985".

Worldcat.org 1988 edition: https://www.worldcat.org/title/machin...

ETA: Added the hardcover cover image from Amazon (cropped and rotated).

Bas | 554 comments It could be the 1988 reprint indeed, but I have no way of verifying this.

What further confuses me, is that the cover which is linked to ISBN 0571136109 on amazon, is clearly not one that corresponds to an edition from Faber & Faber. It does not have their familiar layout, including the "ff" logo.

Instead from the picture you can observe that it is an edition from "Pocket Books" (division of Simon & Schuster). So this is a cover for an US edition, not a UK edition as it should be for F&F.

Furthermore, according to WorldCat I see that the F&F editions of 1984, 1985 and 1988 are all 331 pages, while the Pocket Book edition is 352 pages.

Bas | 554 comments Furthermore, while we are on the topic, the edition:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...

is a hard cover, not a paperback (you can check the link to amazon).

Sorry for putting you through so much trouble!

Ok. What I did was to revert a removal of the automatically imported image from 2014. If it is the wrong cover for the edition, we could add the cover version you have to the record that already have the ISBN, no ACE needed. Any chance you remember where you got your image from?

Fixed. It was an automatic update from Ingram back in 2012 that had changed the format. Reverted it back to hardcover.

Bas | 554 comments Regarding the f&f cover I am not entirely sure how I got it; it could be from some website (but in that case I cannot find it back), or I may have just scanned my own cover. Sorry.

annob [on hiatus] (annob) | 4048 comments If you have the book, would you be willing to take a new photo or scan of it and temporary upload to your photo section? I could grab it from there.

message 12: by Bas (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bas | 554 comments I have made a scan of my cover and put it in my photo section.
Please let me know if it works.

annob [on hiatus] (annob) | 4048 comments Ok great. Please temporarily change your profile from private to allow GR members. As soon as I've grabbed it you can change the setting back to private.

ETA: going offline now, but I'll check back tomorrow.

annob [on hiatus] (annob) | 4048 comments Got the image, you can change back to private now.

The new image is great, better clarity and higher resolution. But it turns out it's actually slightly different than the one you added earlier. Your photo shows a review quote "A stunning first novel" visible on the cover. Since the cover versions are different, I can't delete either of them.

But - good news - you should be able to switch your current shelving over to the version with your improved cover image on the page linked below. It has your ISBN, and I updated the page count listed on Worldcat for the edition, as well as tidied up the name typo in the description text.

Bas | 554 comments Thanks for all the work.
Regarding the name typo I guess you refer to "Jean / Jeans"? I had noted that the default text has "Jeans" but the character's name in the book is actually "Jean"

Yes, that additional 's' was the only thing I changed. Thank you in return for time spent + ability to supply improved picture.
