Biwa | 5 comments South western mystery/crime book--likely one of a series with the same law-woman.
The nearness of her beat to the Mexican border was an important feature, in that a criminal might easily escape that way. I don't remember if she was a sheriff, a detective, or police officer. Her mother was still living in a village in Mexico, which she visited from time to time.
Read sometime in the last 10 years. It reminded me of the writings of Nevada Bar.
If I am not confusing this book with one by Barr, there was a scene involving a suspenseful search in a truck junkyard at night.

Can you rule out the Gloria Damasco series?

The Emilia Cruz mysteries?

Biwa | 5 comments Thanks for a good try, but it looks like both of those authors have their stories set in locations nowhere near the border area in the series I am looking for.

Biwa | 5 comments SOLVED! I can't figure out how to get to the page where solved things should be posted, but I just found a list of likely authors, and re Steven F. Havill, it mentioned that he wrote about a fictional county called Posadas, and the main character, Estelle Reyes-Guzman, was mentioned in a comment about the 'first book in Havill's new series,' Scavengers. The name sounds familiar, and I suspect that is the book I have been looking for. Actually, my aim in doing this search was to be able to read more of Havill's books in The Posadas County Mysteries series, so I am very happy!

Biwa | 5 comments Correction: According to Amazon, Scavengers was not book 1, but book 11 in the series.

Biwa | 5 comments Why does GoodReads plaster the Group Rules right on top of one's comment, so that the "edit" button for that particular comment is obscured and can't be used? It is very annoying, especially as there would be plenty of room for the Rules box to be placed a bit over to the right without hiding anything.

Glad you found your book, Biwa. Is it Come Dark (book #11) or Scavengers (book #1) by Steven F. Havill in the Posadas County Mystery series?

The popup tip/reminder over the Comment box can be annoying. Press the Refresh key (e.g., the F5 key on some keyboards) to clear it. We need to display these key Group Rules because there are new members constantly joining this huge group.
