Richard was walking down the hall when a woman caught his attention. She was in the same creative writing class as him. Though he had never known her name. So he walked up to her with a smile. "Hello, My name is Richard. I think we are in the same creative writing class. What was your name again?" He asked her with a smile, his backpack on his back.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara was hurrying down the hall with her book bag over her shoulder when a man approached her and introduced himself. She looked over and smiled shyly. "I'm Barbara," she replied, still walking with him down the hall. In fact, she was headed to the creative writing class that moment. "Do you like the class?"

Richard was heading to the class as well and was just trying to talk a little with her before class. "I think I do, I enjoy writing, but I can never finish anything and I hate being force to write for an assignment." He told her with a smile as he walked with he down the hallway. "How about you, do you like the class?" He asked her with a small flirty smile. He wanted to know her but did not know what to ask.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

"I'm a big writer," Barbara said. "So I like the class. I don't think I'm great but it's fun." She was shy so sometimes she didn't know what to say either. She smiled back shyly and shifted the bag on her shoulder.

Adler nodded and smiled from her words. "Well I am glad to hear that. You will have to tell me of your stories after class. If you will have me." He said to her with a smile. Though that was all he could say before they got into class. He was in the opposite corner of the classroom from her. So he could only think about her during the class.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara blushed a little at that and did a small shrug thing as if she were bashful. "Oh, maybe, only if you really do like them. They may not be as interesting as you hope," she added. It was true, though. They might be very boring stories compared to what he liked. She went to her seat and pulled out her notebook, waiting as the professor began the class. It was all about developing interesting characters today.

Adler smiled at her blush, it looked cute on her cheeks. Adler sat in class and learned about developing interesting characters. But his mind was still on Barbara. Once the class was over, he got up and went to her. "You do have quite the cute blush if I am allowed to say that." He said to her with a smile. "I would like to hear of your stories if you are willing to share them?" He told her with a smile.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara stood and began piling her items and books back into her bag, hoisting it over her shoulder. She was caught off guard when she heard Richard beside her. "Oh! Um...thank you," she said, her cheeks just blushing naturally again. She glanced at the clock on the wall and then back at Richard. "Only if you are sure...I am not sure they are so interesting myself. I love writing but I struggle figuring out what to put into words sometimes." She started walking with the group as they needed to leave the classroom.

Austin | 1242 comments Mod
Adler nodded from her words and followed her out of the class room. "Well, I can be the judge on if they are interesting or not. Come one share a couple with me and I can share a few of mine with you." He said to her happily. "How do you struggle? Would it help to talk it over with someone?" He asked her with a smile, wondering if he was going too fast.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara did seem to think that this guy was a bit pressing, but maybe it was just because he was outgoing and she was introverted. What story was interesting enough to tell someone else? What one did she feel the most confident in? "Oh," she said again, chewing her bottom lip for a minute. "I think my stories feel flat. There is a plot, but there isn't enough detail and they sound bland."

((Is his name Adler or Richard? He was Adler, then switched to Richard, and back to Adler.))

Richard smiled as she said that there was a plot. But it was lacking. "Come now dear, I am sure it is not that bad. And besides, if you tell me it. Maybe I can ask a few probing questions to help you shape your story." He said as he walked with her to a park outside the college. He found a nice table under a tree and motioned for her to sit down with him and read him her plot.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

((Okay.))

Barbara frowned, thinking it was weird that he was calling her dear since they barely knew who the other was. She hesitated before taking a seat across from him at the table and searching in her bag. "It's about a young courting couple. The beau goes off to war and she doesn't know if he's coming back since years go by. Then she meets another man and they become good friends. Then one day the first boyfriend came back," she explained shyly, handing over a piece of paper with the plot written on it. "I've written a few drafts but it just still sounds like it's missing something."

message 17: by Austin (new)

Austin | 1242 comments Mod
Richard sighed as he could see Barbara being not comfortable around him. He then nodded from her words and looks at the paper she gives to him. "Well if you want more drama. Maybe she is madly in love with her boyfriend. But when he comes back from war, it has changed him and he has a hard time seeing the good in the world and even the love of his woman. So he asks her to help him. But during all that time she was making feelings for his best friend that was against the war and went to college to dodge the draft. So she must choose between the two men. Does that sound like a good improvement?" He askes her with a small nervous smile.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

"You think I could make the two men know each other beforehand, like they're good friends?" Barbara asked. She looked thoughtful. It might work and it might make it more dramatic. Of course, she'd have to rewrite things in the next draft but that was expected. "So maybe the girl is still in love with her boyfriend when he comes back from the war, but then she finds he's changed and instead she starts becoming close to the other man?"

message 19: by Austin (new)

Austin | 1242 comments Mod
Richard nodded and smiled, her seeming to understand what he was saying. "Exactly, it is dramatic because they know each other and are the opposite sides of each other. Maybe the soldier still loves her but is prone to fits of anger or violent out busts and that scares her. Bur always apologizes and comes back to her asking for help. But she increasingly looks to the other guy who is for the moment easier to deal with." He said to her suggesting ideas.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

"Those sound like they would be good plot twists," Barbara nodded, agreeing. She looked back at her paper. "I'll definitely consider it and see where it takes me." She took the paper back and wrote something down on it, making a few notes of the plot ideas.

Richard nodded from her words with a smile. "I am glad that I can help. I am sorry if I am being assertive. I am part of the US army and am stationed here. That is why I am studying here. And well like the character in the book, we sometimes have a hard tome transitioning to civilian live." He explained to her, trying to apologize for his actions.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara put her paper back into her folder and looked up at Richard, clasping her hands together on the table. "It's alright. Forgive me if I come off cold at times. I don't mean to be, I'm just not always good around people," she said, hoping her explanation was okay. She didn't always know what to do if someone flirted with her or wanted to ask questions or whatever. She just did her own thing and that's the way it went. "What about one of your stories?"

message 23: by Austin (new)

Austin | 1242 comments Mod
Richard gave her a small smile and nod at her words. "I am just happy that you have not kicked me away yet." He said happily. He was caught off guard as she asked about him. He always considered himself boring and his work boring. "Yes, well you might not find it interesting or creative. But I really like all of these alien invasion stuff in Scifi. But they are all set in our timeline. So I was thinking what if the Axis won WW2 and had to stop an alien invasion. That would be nuts right. Because who would be the good guys in that? the evil humans or aliens who want our planet?" He said trying to describe it best as he could.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara listened intently as he explained his own story. But in fact it did not sound boring to her. She didn't know a lot about science fiction as it was pretty scarce in novels and movies for this time period, but it sounded interesting. "That sounds intense," Barb said with wide eyes. "I think you'd grab a lot of readers with stuff like that. I think it would depend on which side you wrote the story from, unless you did both and had very good explanations for why either the humans or aliens wanted to do what they did." She looked around and regretted grabbing a warm drink from the café but she could go there later.

Richard got a little embarrassed at her words. He had been told many times that his ideas borrowed too much from others. "I was thinking of telling it from a resistance fighter, fighting both the Axis and the aliens." He said with a smile. "That way they have a moral problem which they need to answer. And are you sure this not too complex? I have been told many times that this is far too complex." He said with a sigh, unsure of his own ideas.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Barb nodded thoughtfully. "That would also be interesting. I don't think it's too complicated. If you go slow and easy into the development with it, then it would be just fine. Maybe if it gets long you could break the story into several books." She leaned her cheek on her hand, elbow propped on the table.

Richard nodded from her words. "That sounds like a good idea. I was just thinking about. Throwing the reader into a world that looks vaguely like our own then slowly introduce changes." He then saw her leaning on her hand like she was disinterested in him. "So tell me Barbara, what do you like to do for fun?" He asked her, hoping something would be something they could do as a group.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

"Yes, I think that would be a wonderful idea," Barbara nodded. "And maybe that will also help with character development, since we talked about it in class today." She thought a moment, still looking thoughtful about his interesting story as she leaned on her hand. "I don't know. I mean, I like going to the fair sometimes or staying home and reading books or taking a walk. And write, of course. What about you?"

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

"And roller skating. I love roller skating," she added.

He nodded with a smile at her words. "Thanks." He said happily. Then chuckled as she talked about class. Richard then nodded with a smile. "Well I am an American if you could not tell from my accent. I enjoy shooting at a range, writing, hiking, people watching." He then laughed as she added roller skating. "Oh, I know how to roller skate. We can do that for a date if you would have me." He offered to her with a smile.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara nodded. She had been able to tell from his strange accent. To her, it was strange anyway. She listened as he explained things he liked doing and smiled, lighting up. Whether it was a date or not, it sounded like it would be fun. "Oh, a date," she said, clasping her hands in front of herself and looking a bit surprised. She didn't think anyone would have her for a date. "That might be fun. We would have to go after class and work, of course."

message 32: by Austin (new)

Austin | 1242 comments Mod
Richard smiled and nodded from her words. Happy that she seemed to like the idea of going roller skating for a date. "Ok, did you want to go after classes and work tonight or tomorrow?" He asked her for a plan so he would not be left in the dust. But he also did not want to be pushy and did not to overstay his welcome either.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara thought a moment and came up with a decision. "Let's go tomorrow after classes and work so we have time to get ready?" She suggested. She was speaking English the best she could, but her French accent was a little thick. She was shy about the idea but it sounded like maybe it would be fun. It didn't mean it would turn into something serious but at least she might have a friend here at the school.

Richard smiled and nodded from her words. "Sure Barbara, that would be a lot of fun. We can meet there. Here is my phone number for my work place. Just call it if you need me." He says to her happily as he wrote down his number on a page and gave it to her. "Your English is good. Better than my French." He says to her teasingly with a smile. He then got up and went to his next class.

The day later, after their classes and jobs, Richard waited for her at the local roller rink. He had already bought his tickets and was watching the people go by as he sat and waited for her on a bench.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara took his phone number in case she needed to call him before tomorrow, or, she assumed, in case she needed to call him in the future. She thanked him and tucked it into her bag, handing over her own phone number on a slip of paper.

The next day, Barbara showed up at the rink with her pair of skates and skated towards him. She was wearing a swing dress from the time period and sat down on the bench beside him. "Good afternoon," she said. "Are you ready to go?" She asked. She gestured towards the others skating by them.

Richard smiled as Barbara came to him finally in skates and wearing a swing dress. "You look so pretty." He told her admiringly as he tied the laces of his skates. "I am ready when you. Though just a warning. I am still a novice at this. When ever I turn I slow down." He warned her then got up. He skated to the skate rink and gently took her hand, making sure that he was on the inside. Then he started to skate with her. Trying to think of things to saw or do.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara double checked her own laces to make sure they were still secure. She blushed a little. "Oh, thank you," she said, giving a soft laugh. Once he was ready, she stood up again. "That's alright. You only get better by practicing. You'll get better," she told him, and skated out to the rink. Together they skated for a little bit. Barbara felt like she was instantly relaxed now that she was doing something she was good at and knew how to do. Richard really wasn't too bad. He did slow down sometimes around the corners when turning but Barb didn't mind. Through the air, 1950s swing dance music was playing.

Richard smiled, enjoying her cute blush and cute laugh. He then nodded with a smile from her. Loving that she was building his confidence. "You have a cute and pleasant laugh." He told her happily as he skated to keep up with her. He heard the music going on as they went around and around. "Do you like to dance?" He asked her lovingly. Thinking she would look so pretty dancing. though he himself was not the best dancer. He was having fun being with her, though she was clearly better at this than him.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara smiled when he complimented her laugh, and let out another small one. It was hard not to when he was being so nice like that. "I don't know how great I am at dancing! Unless skating to music counts," she said, slowing in her skating and suddenly spinning once on one skate before laughing and speeding off again. She was just teasing him in the only way she knew how to, which really wasn't anything at all.

message 40: by Austin (new)

Austin | 1242 comments Mod
Richard laughed happily with her, her happy laugh making him happy. "I would count moving to the beat of anything dancing and it would be very impressive if you do it on skates." He said to her happily. He then gasped and clapped for her as she spun on one skate. "Wow that is very impressive. I don't think I could ever do that." He says, impressed by her display and teasing.

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

"You can learn! It's fun," Barbara said, skating back over to him out of the main circle of skaters. She smiled at him shyly. "When I learned I was constantly falling over. It took awhile to learn but now it's so much fun," she explained, and did it again, one time on each foot. Her skirt swirled around her legs and she almost fell over when she spun on her left leg, not doing as great with that one.

message 42: by Austin (new)

Austin | 1242 comments Mod
Richard laughed happily as she told him that he could learn like her. "I guess I can try it. Though just don't laugh if I fall." He told to her playfully then smiled as she showed off for him. He found her so pretty as her skirt swirled around. "You look so pretty with your skirt shadowing you." He told her as he admired her. Though he did not make a comment about her not doing as well her second time. He tried to spin like her. then once he felt he was ready, he tried to spin on skate, only fall flat on his butt with an ouch from him.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara's face looked surprised when he fell and she paused before offering a hand to help him up. "I'm sorry! It takes a lot of practice. Are you alright?" She asked, sounding worried. She would not want someone else to become hurt on account of herself. Once he stood up fully, she tried to explain. "When you put weight onto only one foot, you have to balance the rest out. So lean more towards that skate instead of still on both like you normally would. Maybe that helps?"

Richard moved to Barbara and took her hand as she offered it. He stood up and started skating with her again. "No it was not your fault. I am ok, just a little bruised." He said to her with a happy smile. He nodded from her words. "Ok, I'll practice balancing on one foot then." He told her as he lifted up the other from the ground and slowed down as he tried to work on his balance. He did not have the best balance. But he did have amazing reflex. "I think I'm getting it." He told her happily as he slowed to an complete stop then started skating faster again.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara also thought he was getting better at his balance on one foot. "You are doing well," Barbara said earnestly, and watched him, skating in circles. When he finished, she went off quickly and went around the rink a few times. After they skated for some time, Barbara went back towards Richard and paused, reaching a hand to the wall to steady herself. "Want to go skating some more or are you getting tired?" She was up for doing whatever he wanted, or going home. She didn't seem to mind.

Richard turned to Barbara and smiled at her complement. "Thanks I think I am learning." He said happily. Then he went back to normal skating and skated with her a few times. He then left the rink with her when she did. "I think my ankles have had enough for one day. I am going to enjoy guard duty tomorrow." He said with a laugh. "We can go home. I'll walk you home." He said with a smile, then sat down and took off his skates. Putting his regular shoes back on and getting used to no longer sliding around.

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

Barbara agreed with him and went to the bench, switching out her skates for her shoes. She tied two of the laces together so she could swing the pair of skates over a shoulder. "Definitely. My ankles are protesting, too," Barb said. When Richard was ready as well, the two walked out to head home. "I don't want to make you walk all the way to my house if you have to get back. It's not too far for me," she said. She didn't want to inconvenience him by making him go out of his way.
Outside, the night was chilly and a faint breeze blew through the air, ruffling their hair.

Richard laughed happily as she spoke about the state of her ankles. He then walked and returned his rented roller blades. He then walked with her out into the city and down the sidewalk with her. He chuckled from her words and saw the breeze ruffle her cute hair. "Oh it is no problem at all. I just want to be a gentleman and make sure I know you are safe before I leave you." He said with a smile. "I could even wrap my arm around you if you are cold." He offered to her, wanting to help her.

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

"That is very sweet," Barbara said with a smile, walking beside him. She did appreciate that he wanted to be a gentleman towards her. And who knew if a thug or thief found her out alone. That would certainly be scary and she didn't want that to happen. Barbara shrugged. "Oh, that's alright. Thank you!" she said, dismissing his offer in a very polite way. "I am not too cold out here. I appreciate it, though."

Richard smiled and his cheeks got red a little from her complement. "Well a woman like yourself deserves a gentleman." He said to her then nodded as she said that she was fine from the temperature. He kept his hands to himself and walked along side her. "So how long have you been in Paris?" He asked her, wondering if she grew up there or moved there. Cities were famous for being a stop in one's life. Few were born and died there. Most came and left at some point in their life.
