August 9 (tomorrow for me) is National Book Lover's Day (at least in the US)!

How many trick-or-treaters did you get? We're so excited, because this is our first year in a long time to get any. Even though we used to live in apartments full of kids, they didn't come to our door. Now, in a house in a quiet neighborhood where we hardly ever see kids, we had four groups, for a total of eight kids! So cute. Some tiny ones, and some big boys almost too old... all good.
It's a mystery to me what brings them out. Today was good weather but a bit chilly - which is default.

Unfortunately, I was not home for most of the Halloween evening. Our library was open until 8:00 pm, and there was early voting, Voting ended at 8 as well, but after the last voter leaves, the judges have to stay and upload their statistics to the elections office, which took them until about 9 pm that night. So I didn't get home until after 9:30. And I didn't see any trick or treaters as I was headed towards home in my neighborhood.
It just seems that so many children just don't go out anymore. But costumes seem to sell well in the stores, and show up on FB and Pinterest. Do ppl go to family house-parties? Or is my town just particularly quiet, I wonder?
I know that a lot of churches have harvest festivals as an alternative to Halloween. I think some elementary schools have carnivals as a way to keep the kids safe on Halloween.

I also know that a lot of families don't trick or treat in their neighborhood but go to a more affluent neighborhood. I work in a fairly affluent neighborhood now and they said they had hundreds of kids and do every year. Kids assume they will get bigger candy bars or more candy in these more affluent neighborhoods.
And yes, I know many churches or other organizations sponsor trunk or treat events or carnivals or other activities.

Does anyone have any ideas?
Hi Penny - I just looked. There were two 'best illustrators' threads in the Themes Topics and Categories folder, both initiated with the same query. I deleted the one that had no replies. Your post is in this thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/....

Penny wrote: "Thanks Cheryl, but I had noticed that there were two and had been posting in the more active one. I was sure I'd made a post below Jenny's with the link to the Caldecott Honors thread, but I guess ..."
Cheryl deleted then one that was a duplicate, which I think makes sense.

But I may very well be sporadically MiA or fall behind in tasks... please don't hesitate to send me a PM if you think something needs my attention as it's easier for me to check in on those than on group threads. Thanks!
