I am pretty sure I read this in high school so mid to late 90's. The story was a girl who was on her own with other kids her age in a slummy urban environment. She was dealing with trying to survive in this setting and heard about a game that is like... virtual reality. There is a prize of some sort, I think, for winning? I remember the twist at the end was that the VR game was really a test to send her game team to another world to try to save the human race.
