SOLVED. Early 90s picture book for tweens w/green magic character named Ree wearing a red hat and red robe. [s]

This picture book was one of a series, I'm guessing from the early 90s. The main character is green, has a football shaped head with big ears, wears a red pointy hat (maybe with a gold star on it?) and has a red robe. Lots of illustrations of the magical world where this character lived. There were all sorts of grottoes and fantasy communities (as I vaguely recall). I recently found a childhood drawing of the character I made, with the word "Ree" next to it, and that sounds right -- i think the character's name is Ree. The plot was about Ree and his friends exploring his planet.
