(warning, I just finished volume 11 so I haven't read past that yet)
First off, lols on the title
Mahouka does a GREAT job of world building. Their magic system, with activation sequences, CADs, types of magic and a bit of actual physics thrown in makes for one of the most detailed systems I've seen.
The whole World War III thing is nice, but they kind of somehow explain how no nukes were used is because of magicians stopping them everywhere which seems a little convenient for me but it makes sense how the outcome is that several large super-states formed.
And magicians running the show is to be expected. I mean, they've got magic.
I really hope as the main characters grow up they experience more of the world.
I think Tatsuya is OPed, but I like Miyuki. Her ice powers are cool and she's balanced since she's not a top-class martial artist. I like Erika and her sword skills and Leo (I wish that fly out sword thing was used more), and Honoka...
I would love to read a book that's just Miyuki + the supporting cast.

book 11 spoilers

That being said...being compared to Tatsuya yeah maybe not as OP but she is still completely and totally broken.
The supporting cast is pretty great though and you have new ones to look forward too.
So is the "My Onii-sama can't be his gary stu" an official translation? lol
(Also, if this is a thread for the series as a whole, could you put that in the title so it doesn't get mixed up with the individual books if a buddy/group read is eventually started?)

Ok, relatively balanced, like balanced for a Tactical/Strategic-class. Is a max radius on Niflheim or a max target count on Cocytus ever stated?
Oh, if you want some good fun, on the Mahouka wiki there's a debate in the comments over who would win, Lina vs Tatsuya.

The official translation is "The Irregular At Magic High School"
The thread title is a reference to the brother/sister romantic undertones and the main characters being gary stu and mary sue.

Ah okay. I figured it was sarcastic, but a small part of me hoped XD

It'd be a WONDERFUL title for an abridged version.

Apparently as well Tatsuya has the same voice actor as Kyousuke Kousaka the protagonist of Oreimo. Also Miyuki is the same voice actress as Ayase (also from Oreimo).

12 was... eh.

I liked 13 better but still needs more action.
Lastly I'll just leave this here:

In general I would like to keep anything past the anime in spoiler tags with the book that the spoilers are in listed if no book is listed assume it's current with the baka-tsuki translations.
So to start off the discussion I personally feel that the Dystopian world they live in Mahouka is actually one of the best YA dystopians I have read because it actually makes sense that the world turned out this way partially because it isn't really comically evil just more of a yeah stuff isn't that great and the governments are doing shady as heck things. The main characters for the most part it is their average world so they are not rebelling against it so it slips past a number of readers. But if you start looking at the way Japan is literally run by the magic illuminati, and all the radical experiments the last generation of mages did on the current one growing up in order to bid for more power and control(hinted strongly in the anime becomes way more prominent later). Combine this with the crazy pressure to marry other strong mages to produce a good bloodline rather then paltry reasons like love. Then you go well that's just Japan and you take a look at the Grand Asian Alliance which has no regard for human life at all. Overall it's kind of weird to see that more subtlety done in the series that wow things are seriously screwed up in this world but it's the only world the characters know so they don't have the jarring everyone on team good guy has our values in a screwed up world.
