The covers on the paperback versions of the books were blue, yellow, and red each.
Read around 2013-2015 though probably published before this time
He had a main love interest in the first book being a childhood friend.
I know in the second book he crosses the land from the west coast to the east coast where parts of the American land had not been nuked so they still had technology. Most definitely not a young teen book series as it touched on heavy topics multiple times
