YA/Middle Grade book where a young boy travels alone to England - on some sort of a mission (something to do with his brother, I think?) and he comes across a gay man who knows someone in hospital and suffering with HIV. The word QUEEN is spray-painted across the building, and the boy thinks it's because the Queen owns the building, not understanding the homophobia. Read this book at high school in Australia, roughly around 2011.

Australian boy, Colin is sent to live with relatives in England while his brother is being treated for cancer. He decides his mission is to find out who are the best doctors - this includes trying to ask the Queen. He meets a man, Ted, outside a hospital who says his friend has cancer. After Ted is attacked he explains that it’s because he is gay. His friend is actually his partner who is dying from AIDS.
