I read this in the ‘80s. A kid discovers he has powers that include telekinesis (maybe mind reading too). Some guy comes along to mentor him. He has the kid squeeze a talisman to channel his power, and they go through a series of progressively smaller talismans as the kid learns to control his power.

I vaguely remember a scene where the boy gets into mischief in a drugstore, sending a bunch of rubber balls bouncing down an aisle, and another where he prevents a younger kid from being hit by a car.
