Penelope Swan (penelopekahlerswan) | 191 comments Does no one else find stating a goal of how many books one intends to read in a year ridiculous? I read constantly. Several books at one time. I start books that present a question that forces me to read sections of other books before continuing to read the first book. How many books do I challenge myself to read in the coming year? Silly question, in my experience of reading. How about you?

Jim Vuksic | 1227 comments Some readers like to establish a specific goal regarding how many books they intend to read within a specific time frame.

Personally, although an avid reader who is always in the process of reading a book, I choose to read when there is nothing better to do. Sometimes I finish a book within a few days, other times it may take a couple of weeks. There are just too many other things to do, people to see, and places to visit.

Sterling Kirkland (sterlingkirkland) I use the challenge for more than just the total number of books. It takes me very little effort to hit 100+ books per year, so this year my goal was to read 100 different authors.

That is a challenge for me. In years past, I've chosen authors who have written a lot of books and read all of them in a given year.

To me, the challenge should be a challenge, whatever that means to the person who makes it. Maybe the challenge could be to read different genres, or different length books (short stories or novellas, etc). Maybe only female authors or authors under 30 or authors who have passed away. Something fun that makes it a challenge.

It seems silly to me too. I don't know how you set a goal to read a high number of books and then don't read a lot of short books to make meeting that goal possible.

Joanna E.Lopez | 12 comments I do the same! I read two books at once. One in the daytime and one at bedtime. I can't count how many that is. Lol. I try to set a goal and I always go over it anyway. Lol.

I am new to this website, and I must say, I don't really get it. I do not wish to turn an enjoyable part of life and turn it into a chore for the sake of completion. If others are able to read many more books than me and still get pleasure out of it then so be it. Live and let live. I usually need savor a book a little more.

Jim Vuksic | 1227 comments Establishing concrete goals for any activity is often essential to achieving anything worthwhile. That said; it is imperative that goal-setting does does not inadvertently allow an enjoyable activity to evolve into an unhealthy obsession that eventually has a negative impact upon essential duties and obligations.
