I apologize because I don't remember the plot very well other than the premise was that the characters lived in a two-dimensional world and could draw new things into existence. I think that there was conflict about the extent to which the 2D plane could expand and how the characters felt limited by lines. The main character seemed unfamiliar with the 2D world and was exploring it for the first time with the reader. I'm not sure if the main character always existed in 2D or if they originated in the real world? I think they could theoretically conceptualize 3D/the real world and had some level of understanding coupled with frustration that they were relegated to only experiencing 2D. I think there was another character who drew using blue and red and was building a house or structure for nefarious reasons? I'm also pretty sure there were violent themes of erasing/killing people and things.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:
The book was very long and its spine thickness was about 4-5cm. The cover was black and quite simple. I think the author was a man. I had a softcover edition. It was published in English, and I believe I picked it up from my local Chapters in Vancouver, Canada.

OTHER DETAILS:
I read this book probably anywhere from 2006-2012. I was a pretty voracious reader in my youth and although I think the plot seemed to be YA and aimed at teens, I am pretty sure I read it when I was around 9-ish/10-ish.

I'm so sorry about how vague this all is but I hope the 2D premise is unique enough to identify it!

The Boy Who Reversed Himself by William Sleator is a book for teens that has to do with exploring 2D, 3D, and 4D dimensions.

The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson is a bit newer than what you said, but it does have to do with drawing two-dimensional creatures who come to life.

Ugh unfortunately it is none of these books! I think the one I read was a bit more contemporary. Thank you very much for your help though!

Thank you so much for your help! It's neither of these, but they both sound really interesting! At least I've gotten some good book recommendations from this :)
