Jack, what's the genre - e.g., YA fantasy, time travel, adventure, suspense?
What is the boy's main reason for traveling to Brazil/etc., and does he travel alone? What are his parents' jobs?

Cheers for the edit, YA adventure and fantasy would make sense.
I cannot remember those details at all.

Actually, cant remember for sure if its book series or just 1 book, but pretty sure it is series.
In the first book the main character (boy) goes to Brazil (or maybe some other latin american country) and learns capoeira, and finds some book which kills people who don't have the right DNA, which he does because of his father and grandfather.
He also gets shot in the leg I think.
In the final book, the boy places some crystal in a special location (maybe singapore?) and this causes a shield to be created from the moon which protects the earth from some extra solar apocalypse event.
There is also some watch which needs crystals to time travel, and one time when he activates it, he finds his father who then dies in a ski resort.
I think at one point in the series the boy goes to another special place where there are some sarcophagi which he hopes has some ancient people who will help them save the world.
