It's 15 hours 20. Not short but not overwhelming either. I can recommend the narration, it's very pleasant.

Hope is set a major character in this book. I love that she chose the name Hope. Of all the shortages the most scary is potential lack of books in the library ;-p

I too like how Hope is being portrayed as another important character. It gives us hope that Meg is not the only one who has managed to live outside the compund and managed to change the viewpoints of those around her. (hide spoiler)]

Well, I read the beginning and 1st chapter. (view spoiler)[ I like the letters, but I am not sure in who Simon is writing to. Or who Prat is. (hide spoiler)] I always feel the first few chapters are the hardest because she is trying to explain everything that happened in all the other books.

Obviously, it brought out the Elder, but was that the point. Because they made it out to be a distraction for 3 ships of poison. But why? It is reminding me a bit of Nazi Germany before WW2 with random attacks and penalties on those who aren't party members.

HFL is losing control, not caring about who among the humans or the others is harmed by their actions. Who are they answerable to? And how will their actions help anyone? It might cause more people to shun HFL. What do you think? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[HFL has lost control. I think any group that are polarized about a cause, may it be good or bad, attract the kin of fanatics that act without thinking of consequences. And while I thing Pater had a plan (and uninformed one but nevertheless a plan) He does not control his group. He did create the rift between humans, but I do not thing he is stupid enough to condone anything against the police. There is too much to loose there.

I agree with all comments. (view spoiler)[ The HFL have gone too far for many humans to be able to stomach. They've lost the Police who are key to population control.

I think this world has very little control either within the human community or the various factions of the Others. Each population is made up of many factions, non of them trusting the rest - just like our own world but more so! For example, if Joe Wolfgard had had control of his pack they might not have rushed into the trap tuat killed them.

The reason the Lakeside Courtyard works so much better is that Simon has worked so hard for peace through compromise and being open to change. He's a really good leader yet even he doesn't have the trust of the full community. He is always walking a tightrope.

ASIDE, the way Simon is panting after Meg, if they both survive, there will be interspecies sex and I'm still not ready for that 😖

Finished (view spoiler)[ well Thasia is a changed place. Limited travel and communication systems will make life difficult for all. So many human settlements have been wiped out and for what? Part of me is sorry Scratch isn't around to witness the results brought about by his movement.

Meg and Simon as slowly changing the boundaries of their relations too. It's not as bad as I'd feared, maybe because of the overall sadness and bleakness of Lakeside.

I liked this more than the last book but it took a while to warm up and I found the early part a bit hard to follow so 3 stars.
