## Story of Transportation- People used to travel by foot and carry luggage on their backs.
- People started using animals as transportation.
- For water transport, people used hollowed logs to get from one place to another.
- Soon they discovered how to put different pieces of wood together and give shapes to the boats.
- These shapes were based on animals already living in the water.
- The invention of wheels changed a lot. Animals were used to pull carts that moved on wheels.
- At the beginning of the 19th century, Thomas Savery, Edward Somerset, Edward Huber, Alexander Bonner Latta invented steam engines.
- Railroads were made for steam engine driven carriages and wagons.
- Later, automobiles like cars, trucks, and buses came into use.
- Motorboats and ships were used on water.
- Wilbur and Orville Wright invented the first aeroplane on December 17, 1903.
- The aeroplanes were improved to carry passengers and goods.
- Electric trains, monorails, supersonic aeroplanes and spacecraft are some of the contributions of the 20th century.
## Measurement
- How did people know how far they have travelled?
Measurement is comparing a known quantity with an unknown quantity. Meaning, if you were to measure the distance from one end of the table to the other, and you used your handspan, the handspan is the "known quantity" as you know how large your handspan is. The length of the table is the "unknown quantity."
The known quantity is called a "unit." The result of the measurement is shown in two ways. A number and the unit of the measurement. For example, if a stack of books is measured by inches and is 15 inches, we write it as, well, 15 inches! 15 is the number and inches is the unit.
Since everybody's hand and foot size is different, when you tell your measurement using your handspan or length of foot as a unit to others, they will not be able to understand how big the actual length is, unless they know the length of your handspan or foot.
## Standard Units of Measurement
In ancient times, when people didn't have a fixed unit, handspans and foot lengths were used to measure distance.
In 1970, the French created a standard unit of measurement called the metric system
