Jason Oliver | 3050 comments I have a feeling I am probably low % with others.

Work for me is crazy. I've been working out in the public all through COVID. My customers are the ones mostly affected. Local restaurants, schools, rest stops, state parks, rec centers, hospitals. Business is coming close to normal, precovid not exactly, especially in schools and hospitals. Lot of pressure this year.

I like hearing about how everyone is working from home and adapting to this new normal.

Well, that explains it. we have 346 books in common and they choose 100 books, so if they choose a different 100 books, the rating changes. I was thinking that our ratings have always been a bit different. I will have to try it on a different day.

Karin | 9249 comments The only people in this conversation that I have 75 % or higher in common are Jason at 75, Johanne at 77 and LibraryCin at 78.

What is interesting is that the two who are over 90 percent with each other are 68 and 59 percent with me.

Sorry, lost my post when I thought I copied it so I could delete it and bring it to this page and read the last two comments first.

But I have eclectic tastes, read some obscure books (sometimes for reading games or challenges) and don't have the highest rating average around. I am trying to gravitate more too books I can give 4 stars to so I can get my average back to the normal 3.4 rather than the barely 3 of the Poll Book Tally year. I have managed to get it up to 3.1 for this year, so will keep working on that.

Karin, you are showing very high with me today at 90%, but we have 347 books in common and they are looking at the Cadfaels which we both love and No 1 Ladies detective.

I'll bet on another day you are at 70 or 80 something.

Weird, because I just checked a second time now and it stll tells me 59 percent when I compare books. Is there something wrong with my compare books function? Perhaps it makes things lower than they really are.

Cut and pasted: "Your tastes are 59% similar for the books you both rated. Here are 100 books you have in common: "

Do I need to change something in my settings?

Amy | 12953 comments Jason, we are 76%. That doesn't surprise me at all. Between Backman, Ken Follet. Liane Moriarty and a ton others, a lot of similar things make sense. Glad to hear you and your family are getting through this crazy time.

I don't think it is a problem with your compare. I think it is fluid and they choose different books to compare.

I imagine you have some of mine which are a little too dark for you and mine showed all the Caedfael and No 1 Ladies Detective series and I know we agree on those.

I've never seen such a range, with both you and Cindy showing in the 90's for me and both of yours showing very low. I'm going to check it out tomorrow and see what it comes up with.

Yes, that's probably what it is. Once upon a time I liked dark novels and read many of them, especially in Canadian literature (mostly women, such as Margaret Laurence, but never Margaret Atwood. Then, as now, I didn't like her books. As my dad says, she's not for everyone. As at least one other Canadian and I say, she's not really Canadian in her writing--not sure if that's LibraryCin or someone else now).

You still are at 90% for me today.

Jason Oliver | 3050 comments When you look at the Compare Books, you can change the shelf just to the read shelf, and on the right side of the screen is a book compatibility test.

LibraryCin is 81% Similar 66% Compatibility
Amy 79% Similar 73% Compatibility
Book Concierge 76% Similar 81% Compatibility
Karin 77% Similar 70% Compatibility
Theresa 68% Similar 49% Compatibility
Robin P 79% Similar 80% Compatibility

message 64: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 983 comments Compared read books:
Joanne: 86% (must be all that fantasy ;) )
Theresa: 70%
Karin: 78%
Amy: 87% (we've only read 36 of the same books, but we seem to agree on those :)
Robin: 82%
Jason: 78%
They all seem pretty high.

Interesting! What is the difference between similar and compatibility, then. It's a wide range for us!

Ironically I am still scoring 92% with you but have a compatibility rating of 48%> How does that happen?

message 68: by LibraryCin (last edited Mar 07, 2021 06:09PM) (new)

LibraryCin | 11722 comments BnB, on only the "read" shelves, I'm seeing 65% similarity and 48% compatibility. So the compatibility is matching.

ETA: As I look closer, it has chosen a lot of books I read a long time ago, so I don't have a rating for. It appears that it's considering that a 0 rating?

message 69: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11722 comments Jason wrote: "LibraryCin is 81% Similar 66% Compatibility

Jason, when I limited to read and looked at compatibility, I'm seeing exactly the same.

I noticed that as well.

message 71: by NancyJ (last edited Mar 07, 2021 10:48PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11115 comments Yesterday I was between 78 and 86 with everyone who had posted here. It looks like the same today.

If you have more than 100 books in common, You might see a different set of books if you switch from Ratings to Inverse popularity.

Bnb 80%
Charlotte 83%
LibraryCin 83%
Amy 82%
Theresa 78%
RobinP 79%
Jason 83%

Surprise - the highest so far:
Karin - 86% - This was a surprise because she is a much tougher grader than I am. But maybe it only counts book on your shelves, not ratings. We have more than 600 books in common, which includes books in our to-read lists (my list is totally out of control),

I also have 86% with Johanne.

message 72: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11115 comments I noticed that many of us have a lot of duplicates. It's tedious to clean that up.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12644 comments NancyJ wrote: "I noticed that many of us have a lot of duplicates. It's tedious to clean that up."

It is really not that tedious Nancy. At the bottom of your list of bookshelves, there are "Tools". In that grouping is "find duplicates"
click on it, and you get a list of all books you are showing duplicates of. Then, just get rid of the ones you want to. I do this all the time. Easy and quick

message 74: by Robin P (last edited Mar 08, 2021 07:01AM) (new)

Robin P | 5805 comments I just checked yesterday and I have 17 duplicates and I don't feel it's quick to delete them. On my computer, it takes a while for each one to disappear (after the warning saying, are you sure?) I think some of them are my fault for not noticing when I added a book whether I was picking the same edition/format.

message 75: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12644 comments @ Robin, I don't have any lag time and my computer is an old one and I have a terrible connection because of where I am at in the house. That's funny, because this dang machine is slow at everything else-LoL

message 76: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 1701 comments I periodically check for duplicates and try to keep them cleaned up. Having a data background I'm very OCD about there only being one and the details being correct for each.

message 79: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8441 comments If you already have a book on your tbr and then you enter a giveaway you may be adding a second edition. This always happens for me when I have a hardcover edition already on my TBR and then I enter a new giveaway when the paperback edition is released.

I'm pretty good about double checking to delete the duplicates once the giveaway contest period is over. But this tool does help to keep my tbr (somewhat) under control.

message 80: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9249 comments When I adjusted to read books,

BnB - 59 percent went to 62 percent.
LibraryCin - stayed steady at 70 %
Charlotte - rose to 72 %
Jason dropped from 75 to 74%
Robin went from 67 to 69 %
Joanne went from 66 to 67%
Amy held steady at 68% as did Theresa
Johanne held steady at 77%
NancyJ went from 63 to 64

etc.

I can't compare books with Sallys even though we are now friends. I am currently on a long hold with the short music l loop and voice interruptions, so if I have missed anyone in this conversation this is why.

message 81: by Theresa (last edited Mar 08, 2021 01:40PM) (new)

Theresa | 15659 comments I clean up duplicates using the tool frequently as duplicates just seem to happen. However there are deliberate duplicates that I maintain...different editions ot translations taet I read or plan to read like Madame Bovary, The Master and Margarita, and a bunch of Greek Classics. I also have duplicates in rare instance where I listened to an audiobook because I have already read it as well.

LibraryCin | 11722 comments Charlotte wrote: "I periodically check for duplicates and try to keep them cleaned up. Having a data background I'm very OCD about there only being one and the details being correct for each."

I check occasionally, as well! I think many I end up with are because I go to the page to write a review... switch to look at the tags (or other editions or something), then come back to the main page, but GR has then, somehow registered a different edition, when I click "Read"! And I end up with duplicates. I usually notice right away (or I think I do!), then I go clean up whatever else is also there that shouldn't be.

ETA: I also have a few on purpose, mostly for ones where I read the print or ebook at one point and later also read the audio.

Ditto about the checking- I HATE duplicates!!

I checked some compatibility, I'm pretty much in the 80% range with everyone in this convo. Also, if you are looking at your friend page- it has everyone listed with "compare books" on the side, so it makes it super easy to compare books with many people.

message 84: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9249 comments I hadn't even realized there was a duplicates tool, and ought to get to it sometime.
