They didn't have any choice, they were "called up", if they hadn't already enlisted, and had to go where they were sent, usually on active service.

Maybe they just figured because he had sons to carry on the business, it was OK. The older two boys must have been quite young at the time. I'm guessing they're 10/11 and 12 now if Pat and Jim have been married 13 years.
Jim and Timothy! That was a great idea to read this was not so long after "They Found Him Dead".
Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ wrote: "Probably our British members could answer this better than I, but I think fear of Hitler would transcend everything.."Yes, I think everybody went to war. Even if you weren't fit to be in the army there was still a chance of a bomb dropping on your head at home.
Hitler as 'the greatest evil ever' is more of a post-war trope. People did their duty. I can't imagine Jim being able to live with himself if he shirked his duty and let other fellows face the danger in his place.
yes, but I agree it would have been nice to see Timothy's Mom & Dad again. They are an interesting couple.

Of course an author can afford to go overboard to make them entertaining as the whole book doesn't revolve around them.
I've always thought it interesting, since Heyer mostly wrote romances, that the romantic relationships in her mysteries aren't very well fleshed out. Other than her smile, I have no idea what Timothy sees in Beulah, for instance. I guess she wanted to focus on the mystery portion instead, but I kind of wish she'd put a little more into the romances.

Yes, that bugged me too, not knowing what Timothy saw in Beulah. As you say, the romance was very sketchy.
Tim might feel he's rescuing Beulah and I also think the fact that she isn't eager to catch him is appealing. Cynthia is too grasping and too stupid for him. Beulah is the anti-Cynthia and more appealing because of it.
Well, I wouldn't expect him to fall for Cynthia. He was always too smart for that. But I'd have liked to see more of why he loved Beulah.
I would agree, I wish we see Timothy recognizing something in her to be attracted to but there is nothing else but he knows she is has class despite having to work for a living and having had some knocks that put a kind of crust on her: she is a gentlewoman. because you can tell by looking at someone and listening to them speak. just like in These Old Shades (view spoiler)
