Read around 2000, but is classic from the 70s I think

From the perspective of a boy who finds his family and girlfriend start ignoring him then forget him completely. He is still there but grey in colour, faded, and can only interact with other faded forgotten things. He eats forgotten food from the back of a supermarket shelf and talks to a tramp (in the railyards?). Eventually he is returned to normal none the wiser
