Hi Gia,
Every time I gave a harmonica to a grandkid, my daughters somehow managed to "lose" them. They're cheap enough to replace, so I did. I love the harmonica.
You brought me back to my childhood with Nancy Drew.

Sadie,
Happy birthday this month!
What are you reading now? I just met with my book club this afternoon on Zoom and finished The Paris Library about 20 minutes before it started. We picked Their Eyes Were Watching God for April.
Sorry about Blackie.
Love,
Your other grandma

Hey!
I'm kinda between books at the moment. I recently finished a book which I didn't really like and left a scathing review.
How was "The Paris Library"?

Cool! :) I still love Nancy Drew! She was so fun to grow up with:) Do you have a favorite book in the series? I have a few favorites. I love so many things about these books (the vintage ones). When I became an adult I reread the entire series. That was years ago now and I think I'm due for another reread soon!

Hi Sadie,
I absolutely loved The Paris Library. It follows 2 characters, Odile starting at the American Library in Paris in 1939 and going through the war, and Lily, a high school girl in Froid, Montana in 1983. An older Odile is Lily's next-door-neighbor. All the lessons that Odile learned the hard way when she was young are pearls of wisdom for Lily as she struggles with teenage relationships with friends and a step-mother. A major theme is what the library meant to Parisians in occupied France.

Hi Gia,
I never learned to play the harmonica and did try to teach myself to no avail. Here is a clip of Dean Martin "playing" the harmonica you might enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Rt1V...
As for Nancy Drew, I only remember The Secret of the Old Clock. (Of course, I was reading them in the 60s. I need to reread them.

Nancy Drew is fun! I love the books, they are suspenseful and no one ever gets killed.

I had never heard of DeFord Bailey before. Thanks for sending the link. I listened to a few more of his songs.

Hi Gia :)
I used to play the trumpet in middle school; that was a few years back ;) I would like to learn to play the ukulele, harp, and piano. I do own a piano and ukulele so now to find time to learn. My daughter takes martial arts, Meibukan Goju Ryu style of karate, and is working towards her brown belt. Oh my goodness, I read all the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books my elementary school library owned. I remember it was when I was in grade five because that year the grade five classroom was right beside the library. <3 And thank you for taking care of the elderly. <3

Hi Janice!
Crocheting is so much fun to do. I really love crocheting, since it's relaxing, and when you're used to the motions, you can just watch something and before you know it, you have a full fledged blanket.
I saw knitting on your list, and I actually want to try that when I've finished learning from crocheting. Italy sounds like an awesome place to visit! Why do you want to visit Italy?

Imagine my surprise when I received (actually my 8-year-old granddaughter who lives with me plus her mom and dad) a set of 4 harmonicas in the mail! That's what happens when your daughter, who started this book club, reads your mail.
My brother was teaching himself to play the ukulele a few years ago. I'll have to check with him to see if he's still playing.

@Karen Oh my gosh, that's fantastic!! I'm so tickled pink and happy for you!! (You have a truly wonderful family and I'm really glad I got to be part of it in my own small way simply by sharing this great love of mine:) Cool about your brother and his ukelele. Ukes are fun too! And ukes and harmonicas blend well together:)
Glad you liked DeFord Bailey, I think his music is so fun:)

@Janice Hello! Well, that's really cool that we have the trumpet in common, I love that! Once a trumpet player, always a trumpet player, right?! Haha!
How exciting! The uke is really so fun and the harp is beautiful! I, too, play the piano but I am a very elementary player, lol! I laugh at myself a lot on piano, but I love it!
Wow, your daughter is almost to brown belt, that's a real accomplishment! I took Judo years ago, but now I really just enjoy a workout at my gym called Les Mills BodyCombat (a mixed martial arts workout with elements of Thai Kwan Do, Karate, Mui Tai, and others). I also practice Tai Chi regularly at my gym and have my certification to teach Tai Chi for Arthritis to seniors.
I love Nancy Drew. I've never read the Hardy Boys; I need to! I only have a couple of Hardy Boys books on my shelf, unread.
Thank you! I love serving the elderly, they are my favorite age group of all <3

Hey Kim!
Gypsy is such a cute name! I can't say I had rats as a pet, the most closest to a rat I had was a few hamsters which I named Sue #1 and Sue #2. I wasn't very creative with names as a 7 years old girl.
Warm apple tart sounds amazing to have right now.
What are the differences between Ireland and NZ as countries that you've seen?

Yeah she is a cute dog, she has such a unique personality and brings so much joy to the family. I totally understand about the rats, when I used to tell people they usually look at me like I'm a bit crazy and to be honest, I would have thought the same until I seen how tiny and scared of me they were! It just made me want to look after them :)
Hmm well I've lived in the two main cities of each - Dublin and Auckland and I definitely feel like Dublin has a lot more of a bustling city feel to it. Auckland is a bit more laid back and slightly feels like stepping back in time a few years. Dublin is a lot smaller as well so you can rely on public transport and being able to get anywhere in the whole country within a few hours. In Auckland you NEED a car to get around but you are never more than a few minutes from a stunning view. NZ is more expensive in my opinion but I think it's because of the more limited options. Both countryside's are beautiful, Ireland is rugged and wild with rolling hills full of wildflowers and sharp cliffs and sooooo much incredible history, NZ has mountains and beaches and lakes and palm trees. The South Island of NZ has Fiords and glaciers as well and is even more beautiful in my opinion.
Sorry for such a long winded answer haha both countries are amazing!!

Rats are cute, but I wouldn't want to be responsible for such small creatures. I saved a little mouse last summer during a thunderstorm, and that was probably the closest thing I came to having a small creature around, lol. I'd be so scared to step on them by accident.
I love hearing details about things like that. It makes me feel like actually being there in person. My grandmother's grandparents were from Dublin, Ireland, so I've always wanted to visit Ireland. I know I still have family over there.
Dublin and Auckland sounds amazing to be honest. Are there any differences in their cultures/society and such? Sorry I'm asking so many questions. It just sounds like an awesome place to live.

Wow, that's a lot of martial arts you do!!! I'll be sure to stay on your good side ;) My daughter wants to attain her black belt and see how many levels she can go. :) I was just taking a small group class of Tai Chi just before Covid hit. I only went to 2 classes, but hoping when life returns to "normal' that the lady teaching it will continue. And it takes special loving and caring people to work with our seniors and I'm glad you are one of them. <3

Wow that's pretty cool, I actually did a lot of work on my family tree during our first lockdown here in NZ and I got back to the early 1800's without any of my family being born outside of Dublin haha! I think I had a couple of distant relatives go to America around the time of the famine but it was hard to get any information past that point.
I do think the cultures are different. Ireland has such a rich history dating back to 4000 BC whereas NZs history only dates back about 700 years. Irelands history is everywhere you go, with castles, tombs, monasteries, round towers build by Celts and Vikings, not to mention the stories from Irish mythology, our Gaelic language and sports and our rebel songs that come from when we were fighting for our freedom from England - which are still sung in pubs every night all over the country. The Irish history/culture is deeply engrained in us.
NZ of course has its own Maori history but with the Maori population only being 16-17% of the whole country, the average Kiwi doesn't seem to have much interest in it and seem quite disconnected to it (in my experience). The Kiwi culture seems to mainly be BBQs and rugby!
I do find the work/life balance in NZ a lot better, and the general work culture to be a lot less stressful - in Dublin it felt like 110% was expected at all times and anything else wasn't good enough.
My life has changed a lot in the last few years so a lot of time in Ireland was spent drinking and going to pubs/clubs and social events. I don't generally drink anymore so my life in NZ is very different, I prefer waking up early and going on a nature walk or bringing a book to the beach.
I still find it strange that you see people walk barefoot in NZ - even in the supermarket!! I feel surface appearances are more important in Dublin. There's probably heaps more, I'm sure I could go on for ages but I don't want to ramble on for too long and bore you haha!! :)

@Janice Haha! Actually, I only do a little bit of mixed martial arts in one weekly workout (oops, I may have given you the wrong impression...I'm not really all that tough, lol!) and I practice the Tai Chi twice a week. Your daughter, though, she's the one really doing it! Wow! How exciting! You must be so proud! :) I sure would be. I hope you can return back to your Tai Chi class soon. I think it's so relaxing and beautiful. Just like poetry in motion:) Thank you, I am too, it's an honor to serve the elderly. They are the best!

I am so proud of her and happy that she wants to pursue her karate even further. She really wants to travel to Okinawa, Japan someday to take some classes and see the history of the type of karate she is learning. I really did enjoy those few classes of Tai Chi and what a great way to relieve stress and it certainly helped with my anxieties.

I've noticed that not many records survived past the time of the famine, and if they did, they usually don't give a lot of info beyond the name of the parish of their birth, etc. my side came from the county cork area.
Ireland's history is so fascinating. I studied a bit of Gaelic but not too well lol. I'd love to visit Ireland someday!
I can't imagine walking into the grocery store in the states barefoot without getting yelled at, haha.
