unless your family is "indigenous" then they came from somewhere else. at any rate, the prompt as given appears to point at native American authors -- many names that appear to be native American are not. many authors who appear to be native American are not -- for example prolivid western author Tony Hillerman. Dee Brown, Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee, marketed himself as writing from a native American point of view, but was not native American.

This is so true, Soc.

When the word "Indigenous" is used, with a capital letter "I", it means something radically different from the lower cased word. It refers to a People with a history of not only first inhabitation, with a history of colonization, but also a continued relationship with the land, and with the tribe/ group of people.

I thank you for speaking up!

I am not American. I have no record of my family living anywhere but the British Isles. Maybe you are calling me indigenous, but your suggestion of a prompt was to do with emigrating. So my point still stands. You are assuming there are no indigenous members doing the challenge. Or people who don't know their ancestry for various reasons.

I was not commenting on what indigenous means.

Mary Beth (mary-beth-c) | 23 comments Date you finished: October 5.

Message number of your list post: 259 (the books can also be found on my Popsugar 2021 shelf).

Favorite prompt: Probably “a book about art or an artist.” I read The Lady in Gold: The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt's Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer by Anne-Marie O’Connor because of a vague sort of awareness about the history of Klimt’s painting, and it was fascinating—much more tragic and complex than I’d realized.

Favorite book: The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, which I used for “the book that’s been on your TBR list for the longest amount of time.” I was intimidated by it, and it took me a little while to get into it, but ultimately it was enthralling and I babbled about it to anyone who would listen for at least a week after I finished.

A book you especially enjoyed that you never would have read if not for the challenge: For many reasons, I think extreme mountain-climbing is absurd, so despite my great appreciation for some of Jon Krakauer’s other work, I’d never had any interest whatsoever in reading Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster. “A bestseller from the 1990” finally motivated me to do so, and it was deeply compelling—immersive and thoughtful. I loved it.

Least favorite prompt: “A book that was published anonymously.” I was too pedantic about this (I just don’t think pseudonyms and anonymity are the same thing) not to feel really boxed in. I ended up reading Becoming Duchess Goldblatt: A Memoir, which was fine, but not anything I really needed in my life, either.

Prompt you hope to see again: “A book set somewhere you’d like to visit [this year].” I just am not comfortable traveling right now, which made this prompt a real downer. Maybe next year or the year after, this prompt would be more fun! (My husband and I are attending an outdoor wedding reception in Nashville later this month, so I read The Fortunate Ones by Ed Tarkington, which was fine but not really my thing; neither it nor the prompt brought me a lot of pleasure.)

Last prompt you finished: “The longest book (by pages) on your TBR list.” After an aborted attempt at Hawaii by James Michener, that got removed from my list entirely, and I ended up reading Bleak House by Charles Dickens, which was, yes, really long—enjoyable but looong.

Were you overall satisfied with your Challenge reading? Yes! I’m happiest when I’m reading a very wide variety of books, and dipping in and out of challenges keeps me out of ruts.

Did you like the TBR theme for the “advanced” prompts? Not really. I usually prefer prompts that push me to look for books I’m not already actively intending to read, and I didn’t like the objective one-possible-answer nature of some of the prompts (the longest and shortest books on your list, for example).

Are you in for 2022? Absolutely! I’ve been doing this challenge for a while now, and I get ridiculously excited and impatient waiting for the new list to go up at the end of the year. (In the meantime, I’m making my way through the 2017 list, which was before my time. I’m currently done with 38 out of 52 there!)

Favorite prompt (and what book did you read for it?): favorite was probably Afrofuturism. Read Dawn
Favorite book (and what prompt was it for?): The House in the Cerulean Sea - fresh start

Was there a book you especially enjoyed that you never would have read if not for the Challenge? (and what prompt was it for?) : maybe You Should See Me in a Crown. I might have read it eventually,. i don't go out of my way to YA so it it at least encouraged me to read it sooner.

Least favorite prompt: 90's bestseller. I feel like prompts keep ending up here, whether on purpose or not. I think one year there was a "best seller in the year you graduated high school" which was in 2000...which is close enough to the 90s that it was a very similar selection. And then last year with the 20th century, while of course there was a whole century to pick from, I don't love classics. so that again tended to push me towards 80s/90s.

Prompt you hope to see again: I always like the book published in the year of the challenge, or books related to social justice.

Last prompt you finished: Dream Job

Were you overall satisfied with your Challenge reading?: It was ok, i felt like i had to struggle through a lot of books I wasn't enthused by just to fill difficult prompts.

Did you like the TBR theme for the "advanced" prompts?: Not really. I don't keep a formal tbr list. I used 'books I own but haven't read', but I tend to read from that as much as I can anyhow. I felt like the tbr ones were too limiting. The longest book only really has one option unless you fudge it to "one of the ____ longest", same with shortest. Covers are subjective and again it was "prettiest" and "ugliest" rather than just "a pretty cover" or "an ugly cover". Also since i don't keep a formal tbr list, it's just books I own, books on there longest were mostly books I wasn't really interested any more but I own them. Mostly digitally, so there's not really a "give them away" thing.

Finally, are you in for 2022? not formally. I've been doing this since 2015, getting a bit burnt out. Also since now i do multiple challenges, i'm finding that the prompts are starting to make it so I end up not reading piles of books i WANT to read, because they don't fit a prompt. And then i read a bunch of books I don't really care about just because they happen to have a certain color cover, or a certain word in the title. I might fill in after the fact next year, just to see how i did without trying. I'll still post in the group though!

Favorite prompt (and what book did you read for it?):
Dark academia, I didn't even realise this was a genre before, but I really enjoy these books. I read The Last Graduate by Naomi Novik.

Favorite book (and what prompt was it for?):
Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse for indigenous author.

Other challenge books I gave five stars to:
Carpe Jugulum (re-read), The Last Graduate, Brown Baby: A Memoir of Race, Family and Home, Firekeeper's Daughter, The Forevers

Was there a book you especially enjoyed that you never would have read if not for the Challenge? (and what prompt was it for?) :
I don't usually read cosy mysteries but I read Arsenic and Adobo for a book set in a restaurant and it was fun. I will be continuing the series.

Least favorite prompt:
Please stop making my read bestsellers from the 90s! I used a Discworld re-read for this as it was effectively a repeat of a previous most-disliked prompt (bestseller from when you graduated).

Prompt you hope to see again:
I love the specific sub-genre prompts.

Last prompt you finished:
A book my "best friend" would like, I read The Anthropocene Reviewed which made me think of the podcasts my partner likes to listen to and I felt that was close enough to finish the challenge off!

Were you overall satisfied with your Challenge reading?:
I feel like it was a struggle this year, too many prompts with an individual aspect that I got stuck on and ending up feeling like I had to cheat. Best friend, everyone's read it, dream job, favourite thing, like to visit, etc. I'd rather prompts focus on the books, not aspects of my life.

Did you like the TBR theme for the "advanced" prompts?:
Not really, I don't like prompts that only have one possible option and my TBR is a big list of all the unread books I own...so I didn't feel I could remove books I wasn't interested in right now without actually getting rid of the book.

Finally, are you in for 2022?
Probably but I'll likely not bother with the advanced prompts.

Favorite prompt (and what book did you read for it?):
A Book with Something Broken on the Cover. I read Kent State

Favorite book (and what prompt was it for?):
Ballad of the Whiskey Robber: A True Story of Bank Heists, Ice Hockey, Transylvanian Pelt Smuggling, Moonlighting Detectives, and Broken Hearts A book that has fewer than 1,000 reviews on Amazon or Goodreads. This is an engaging true crime story in post-Communist Hungary with larger than life characters and fun voices and sound effects if you listen on audio.

Was there a book you especially enjoyed that you never would have read if not for the Challenge? (and what prompt was it for?) :
The Red House Mystery for the locked room mystery. I didn't know that A.A. Milne had written books for adults, and this one was very good.

Least favorite prompt:
A book whose title starts with "Q," "X," or "Z"

Prompt you hope to see again:
A book set in a restaurant

Last prompt you finished:
A book that has won the Women's Prize For Fiction

Were you overall satisfied with your Challenge reading?:
Yes, many of the books were quite interesting

Did you like the TBR theme for the "advanced" prompts?:
No, I don't have a TBR

Favorite prompt (and what book did you read for it?): #47: A book from your TBR list you associate with a favorite person, place, or thing - The Return of the King - This book reminds me of my favorite movie trilogy, LOTR, and also of my favorite place, New Zealand
Favorite book (and what prompt was it for?): #13: A locked room mystery - Anxious People - The humor was something special and I can't wait to read another Backman novel (I'm looking at you Beartown)
Was there a book you especially enjoyed that you never would have read if not for the Challenge? (and what prompt was it for?): #25: A book that was published anonymously - Pride and Prejudice - I was pleasantly surprised at how good this book is
Least favorite prompt: #7 - A book where the main character works at your current or dream job - Along Came a Spider - It was a real struggle to find an interesting book to fit this prompt for me because I want to be a clinical/sports psychologist so I just settled for a detective with a background in psychology. And then after all the searching this ended up being one of the worst books I read this year.
Prompt you hope to see again: #21: A genre hybrid - Lovely War - I enjoyed this prompt a lot, and there are definitely many more genre hybrids out there waiting to be read by me
Last prompt you finished:#49: A DNF book from your TBR list - Jane Eyre
Were you overall satisfied with your Challenge reading?: Yes :)
Did you like the TBR theme for the "advanced" prompts?: I liked the TBR theme because it provided the push I needed to finish some of the scarier-looking books on my shelf.

Favorite prompt (and what book did you read for it?): A genre hybrid - The Once and Future Witches (historical fantasy)
Favorite book (and what prompt was it for?): Cemetery Boys - I used it for the prompt from a past POPSUGAR Reading Challenge: A book by a trans or nonbinary author
Was there a book you especially enjoyed that you never would have read if not for the Challenge? (and what prompt was it for?) : Probably My Almost Flawless Tokyo Dream Life (A book set somewhere you'd like to visit) - it was super fluffy and silly but exactly what I needed to read this year.
Least favorite prompt: A bestseller from the 1990s - I read The Golden Compass but it was such a struggle to find something I wanted to read for this prompt.
Prompt you hope to see again: Genre hybrid - it allows so much flexibility
Last prompt you finished: A book with a gem, mineral, or rock in the title - The Stone Sky
Were you overall satisfied with your Challenge reading?: Yes, overall it was pretty good. I think my lowest rated prompt book was still 3 stars.
Did you like the TBR theme for the "advanced" prompts?: I didn't like the the DNF prompt, but I was able to work with the others. For the most part, I didn't take it literally and used it to clean out my long library hold list, and not my greater TBR. I also used the DNF prompt to read a book that I set aside intending to read later, rather than one that I DNFed for other reasons.
Finally, are you in for 2022? Probably, but it will depend on the prompt list.

Were you overall satisfied with your Challenge reading?: Yes! I liked the variety of prompts. I was able to fulfill most of them with books already on my shelves.

Did you like the TBR theme for the "advanced" prompts?: I did and didn't. When the prompts were announced, I was thrilled. I felt like I would finally tackle some of the books that have been sitting on my backlist for so long. But I guess there's a reason they've been sitting there. These ended up being some of my hardest and last-to-fill prompts.

Finally, are you in for 2022? Absolutely! I can't wait for the announcement of the prompts.

Favorite book (and what prompt was it for?): it's a toss-up between Easy by Tammara Webber (for the prompt A book everyone seems to have read but you) and The Crown of Gilded Bones by Jennifer Armentrout (for the prompt A book you have seen on someone’s bookshelf ), which I have been looking very much forward to, and seen on numerous virtual bookshelves even before the Challenge

Was there a book you especially enjoyed that you never would have read if not for the Challenge? (and what prompt was it for?) : The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, which I read for "a book on a Black Lives Matter reading list", is such a powerfully written book that you can't help reacting to the message and the situations contained within.

Least favorite prompt: A book that discusses body positivity - the hangups about weight/ beauty/ scarring get heavy after a while.

Prompt you hope to see again: A book set somewhere you’d like to visit in [year].

Last prompt you finished: 31. A book by a blogger, vlogger, YouTube video creator, or other online personality, which I read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green" Saved this for the last as I knew going in, this would be a difficult book to read. (because ... spoiler alert - main character died young!)

Did you like the TBR theme for the "advanced" prompts?: I didn't try the 'advanced' as this is my first time attempting this challenge. That said, I have long TBRs so this would have been a great one to add for the regular challenge

Finally, are you in for 2022?: YES, depending on the prompts.

Before the Coffee Gets Cold I hadn't heard of this book but I went looking through suggestions for the restaurant prompt and I saw this. I absolutely loved it and I'm really looking forward to the sequel.

Least favorite prompt:
A book you have seen on someone’s bookshelf (in real life, on a Zoom call, in a TV show, etc.). I hate prompts like this.

Last prompt you finished:
A book from your TBR list you meant to read last year but didn’t. Most of the books I used for the advance prompts worked for this, as well as several other books, So in a way, this was also the first prompt I finished.😋

Yep. I got bogged down a bit at the end and felt like I was never going to finish, but I still finished with almost 2 months to spare...

Did you like the TBR theme for the "advanced" prompts?:
I straight up ignored the superlatives - I just read a long book, short book, etc. But other than that I liked having the motivation to tackle my physical TBR.

Finally, are you in for 2022? Yep. Please don't make me wait till December for the new list to come out! 🥺🥺🥺🥺

Favorite book (and what prompt was it for?): I can't just choose one! But I'd lean towards Daisy Jones & The Six, which I read for "a book about art or an artist". I loved it so much!

Was there a book you especially enjoyed that you never would have read if not for the Challenge? Favorite prompt (and what book did you read for it?):
39, A book everyone seems to have read but you -- I read Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. This prompt forced me to finally pick this book up from my TBR piles and read it.

Favorite book (and what prompt was it for?):
My favorite book was Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley. There are so many things to like about this book: the cover, the story, the main character. I really, really enjoyed this one. It satisfied prompt 16, a book by an indigenous author.

Was there a book you especially enjoyed that you never would have read if not for the Challenge? (and what prompt was it for?):
I read Carrie Fisher's Wishful Drinking. I'm not usually a memoir or biography reader, so I probably wouldn't have picked it up. I chose this book for prompt 4, A book by an author who shares your zodiac sign.

Least favorite prompt:
My least favorite prompt was 25, a book that was published anonymously. I wasn't thrilled with the suggestions that I found on Goodreads. Luckily I stumbled upon Becoming Duchess Goldblatt: A Memoir and really enjoyed it.

Prompt you hope to see again:
40, Your favorite prompt from a past Popsugar Reading Challenge. I like this prompt because it gives you an easy way to fill in a book. It reminds me of the free space on a BINGO card.

Last prompt you finished:
39, A book everyone seems to have read but you.

Were you overall satisfied with your Challenge reading?:
Yes, this is my second or third time doing one. I plan on participating in 2022's challenge.

Did you like the TBR theme for the "advanced" prompts?:
No, actually I did not, and I chose not to do them. I have nothing against TBR piles, but I was overwhelmed on figuring out how to compile all of my physical books (scattered throughout my house) and all of my Kindle TBRs into a manageable list so that I could figure out which one had been there the longest, which one was the shortest, etc. I just decided not to worry about it.

Definitely!

Favorite prompt-The longest book on my TBR list. I read Edge Of Eternity by Ken Follett (3rd in a trilogy, so I also read Winter of the World which was the 2nd longest book on my TBR list).

Favorite book-The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah

Book I especially enjoyed that I would not have read if not for the challenge-Zen in the Art of Writing by Ray Bradbury. I have always liked Ray Bradbury's writing but had never heard of this book. I only discovered it because I needed a book title starting with Q, X, or Z.

Least favorite prompt- Afrofuturist book. I read the graphic novel of Parable of the Sower. The category is a good one, but I picked a book I didn't really like. I'm not sure if it was the story or format, but it was my least favorite book.

Prompt you hope to see again - any of the TBR prompts. My TBR bookcase is full....

Favorite prompt (and what book did you read for it?): hmmm. I think I'll go with "a book everyone has read but you" because it was good incentive to find a book that I always feel sheepish for not having read yet. I went with Between the World and Me which was great!

Favorite book (and what prompt was it for?): this is an unfair question because I read several books I really loved this year, but I'll go with One Last Stop, which I read because I wanted to and used it for the "favorite person, place, or thing" prompt.

Was there a book you especially enjoyed that you never would have read if not for the Challenge? (and what prompt was it for?): I saw Anxious People on the list for locked room mystery and had never heard of it, but it was such a good read and introduced me to a new author I went to read more from!

Least favorite prompt: tie between the Women's Fiction prompt (the options were very limited) and the "different format than you usually read" prompt (I already read in pretty much every format so this one was difficult for me to find something for).

Prompt you hope to see again: a few! I like the prompts that are meant to add more diversity to your reading, and I also enjoy the ones where you have to find something in the title or author's name.

Last prompt you finished: "book with a family tree" which I took a very loose interpretation of. I started two other books for this prompt and was not enjoying them, so I went ahead and just read a book I DID want to read and made it fit.

Were you overall satisfied with your Challenge reading?: I think so!

Did you like the TBR theme for the "advanced" prompts?: I did! It made me read books that I threw on my to-read list then promptly forgot about for ages.

Finally, are you in for 2022? Yes! This was my first year doing any reading challenges, and I had a lot of fun!
