A servant boy is returning from getting medicine, I think in the snow, when he saves a baby some kind of magic creature from hunters. When the hunters find out he dies protecting the baby then the mother brings him back to life. Upon death he casts a death spell in the form of a storm and a nearby mage, I think his name is Colwin, recognizes his power and takes him to the mage school. It is on an island across a lake from the capitol where the king's castle is. He inadvertently meets the prince who is very sickly and they decide to go on a trip to see if the creature that saved the boys life would heal the prince. On the journey they figure out that the prince was being poisoned by the king's advisor who is a power hungry mage. They heal him and return to find the king dead but they kick out the mage advisor and the prince rules. There are 3 or 4 books in this series and in the second or third the prince and the boy become lovers.

Please let me know if you know what this book is it has been driving me crazy and searching doesn't seem to be working.

This sounds very much like The Wizard of Bright Isle. The mage / wizard is called Lord Colwyn.
