Number of plot threads

In my Flight of the Wren series, we follow a large cast of characters as they pursue multiple plot threads all across Scandinavia at the end of the Viking Age. I wanted to write a broad story about the lives of nobles, commoners, and slaves. So, here is my question: In a 400 page book, how many plot threads is too many for you?

As the series progresses, I find that I take a great interest in some characters, and end up pursuing their story more than I anticipated. That's why Agatha Rothskilde gets so much ink in The Loom of Bones (coming soon). Her side-story quickly turned into a leading role in the novel as her love story with Lady Locksley became so intense.
There are a lot of other huge series out there with multiple threads: Lord of the Rings, GOT, Sword of Shannara, etc. I imagine that everyone will have their own answer, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. XO, W
