lacy white (ravensandlace) Hi! I'm Lacy from Iowa. I work as a dietary aide at a nursing home.

I joined this group because I was looking for a chill group where I could just vibe. Sometimes I don't always have time to participate in the group reads or I'm unable to get the book so it's nice to find group that doesn't stress that.

My favorite genres are historical fiction and anything YA. I love reading about medieval times, Russian tzars and anything in between.

I also am a gamer and play pretty much Overwatch. lol.

Hi Lacy! I enjoy historical fiction, too! I've always been interested in the history of Russian Tzars. The lives of Nicholas, Alexandra and their children have especially fascinated me. Such a tragic end for all of them. Welcome to our group!😊

Jacquelyn | 2 comments Hello, all! I'm Jacquelyn and this is my first go at a Goodreads book club. I enjoy both nonfiction and fiction (literary fiction, occasionally mystery and time travel-type sci-fi), but nonfiction a bit more -- usually history and travel writing (so I'm excited for the current reads!). I haven't read as many books as I'd like to in the last decade-plus, but I've been working to get back in the swing of things this year and quite happy to find excuses to read some new stuff.

Jackie | 2 comments Hi group! My name is Jackie. I’m kind of new to Goodreads and still trying to get the lay of the land as it were. I love reading with my whole heart. Most days I’ll have no fewer than three books that I pick up and read from. It keeps me busy, but it keeps me happy. Hope y’all are having a great weekend!

I started the Emporium of Imagination but gave the copy to my daughter when she was in town and while waiting for my new copy to be delivered (it's an Australian book) I started Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children series- became addicted; and haven't touched the other book I started- Dictionary of Lost Words. I haven't even touched one of this month's books.

Hi Petra. I just started liking thrillers, I'm normally a big chicken. I am reading Six of Crows (one of this months selected books). I am new to the world of fantasy and it was difficult switching gears at first from fiction but all of a sudden I read for 3 hours without noticing and couldn't put the book down. I'm glad you joined the group!

Bobbie | 1 comments Hi! My name is Bobbie and I’m new to this Goodreads Group thing. I LOVE to read but feel like I’ve lost touch in recent years and haven’t been reading as often as I’d like. Hoping to get back to my first love. Looking to expand my reading horizons and look forward to some great book recommendations. Excited to be a part of a warm and welcoming community.

Gia (readergrl) | 2 comments Hi! My name is Gia from FL. I'm an introvert and bookworm. I read Six of Crows a couple of years ago and War of the Worlds just happens to be one of the books I'm currently reading! I read pretty much anything fiction and if there's a subject I'm interested in, non-fiction, too. My favorite genres are mysteries, thrillers, YA, fantasy, urban fantasy and romance (mostly contemporary and paranormal). I'm excited to be here!

What a coincidence! I started Six of Crows and it's my first in this genre. I thought I would have more trouble getting into it, but after the 2nd page I was hooked. I am happy you're here. Sadly off to work in the rain. It's perfect reading weather.

Nidhi Kumari Hi all I am Nidhi. I mostly like classics. I found this group's name very interesting , and the book list also very promising. Little Women is a good book and new movie which has Emma Watson as Meg is beautiful. Film makers make beautiful movies out of classics, I must say .

Hi, welcome to the group Jakob! I'm Hope, Mom gave me the nudge and I couldn't stop laughing: "forgets about the outside world at times". She couldn't be more accurate. I absolutely love dystopian novels! There's so much to recommend!
If you like Dystopian YA Books:
-Divergent Series (is the way to go!)
-The Maze Runner Series
-The Testing Series
-Wither (it's interesting but I never completed the series)
-Ready Player 1

If you like Classic Dystopian:
- 1984 by George Orwell (my number one recommendation and the one that started it all!)
- Fahrenheit 451 (ultimate fave)
- The Giver
- Handmaid's Tale
- Brave New World

Additional Suggestions:
- 1Q84 (Parallels to 1984, different author though. Its by Haruki Murakami)
- American War (not my highest recommendation but it's interesting)

Now I've heard about this one, Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler, I have yet to read it but would definitely love to. As mom pointed out, I do work 2 jobs now and I'm hosting a festival, so my time's been pretty limited lately. Anyways, happy reading! I hope there was something that peaked your interest :)

Thanks for all the suggestions, Hope! It seems we have similar taste ;) I too really liked reading the IQ84 series, Fahrenheit 451 and Brave new world. I have yet to read 1984. Will definitely check out your other recommendations.

Let me recommend these back to you:
The Testaments by M. Atwood
The Memory Police by Y. Ogawa
The Dark Tower book series by S. King (my absolute favourite!)

Hope Jakob wrote: "Hope wrote: "Jakob wrote: "Hello everyone. My name is Jakob and I live in Gothenburg, Sweden. I especially like reading books where dystopia and/or adventure is the underlying theme. Since I am con..."

We do have similar taste! The Testaments is already on my wishlist to read, she's the same author for Handmaid's Tale. As for Dark Tower, I started reading that a while back. I'll have to pick that series back up then.

The Memory Police, title alone, made me wonder if it was inspired by 1984. That captured my attention really fast and had to look it up. "...takes place on an island with a setting reminiscent of that in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four."

You've just added another book to my shopping cart! You won't be disappointed with 1984 then, it's clear the Orwell has inspired several other authors!

1984 was a required book for my high school class and I remember being the only person who was so into it. It just sent me spirling into a rabbit hole of dystopian worlds and I haven't been able to stop since.

message 78: by Kristine (new)

Kristine | 1 comments I'm 39, I live in Illinois and am newly disabled so I have a lot of time on my hands. I've always been an avid reader. Growing up, I watched my mom always reading. She worked 12 hour days, six days a week, but always found time to read every night.
Back then (in the 80s and 90s) Stephen King was very popular. I was around ten when I picked up "It" and started reading it. I went to the public library on my own (small town) and enlisted in their reading clubs and I always had age appropriate books, but once my mom started bringing home James Patterson books I was hooked! lol
Well I've rambled on and on and still haven't said what I like to read. Obviously Patterson, I love Harlan Coben and John Sanford. Karen Slaughter and Patricia Cornwell. I'm sure you can glean the types of books I've read without me adding more.
One thing about me is I am 200% open to book suggestions. If it's something you think I'll like, I will more than likely borrow it from the library and give it a try. I welcome the suggestions, in fact it's why I finally made this account. Gosh this is so long. Hope to hear from you!!

James Patterson! I remember years ago I read one of his books start to finish while "working". I was a temp for this one doctor. He was just starting out in a new practice so his schedule wasn't busy and he had a stack of books in the lunch room. He said relax, grab a book. I'll get you if someone shows up. It was the best time I ever had.

I'm Meredith; I read everything honestly but since losing my Dad in January all I've been wanting to read really is romances and fantasy.

I used to run a book group online previously and I'm hoping to find a place similar to land. Most of the groups I've found here have been more challenge oriented and I'm looking to find like minded readers who can inspire my reading choices.

Katie (thoughtprocesses) | 36 comments Hello everyone, I am Katie. I read whatever peaks my curiosity at any given moment. I usually read multiple books at once; devouring some immediately and switching between the others like TV channels. My main brain food groups are: historical fiction, sci-fi, historical non-fic and thrillers. I joined Goodreads over a year ago after a lovely friend suggested it to me, (I was bemoaning having lost hard copy list with 5 years worth of my reads.), and I became hooked! I am very happy to join this group, I am curious about what interests other people in their joys as a literary diet.

Kira FlowerChild (kiraflowerchild) Hi, I'm trying groups again. I'm pretty introverted so it's kind of hard for me to put myself out there, but I'm trying. I read books mainly for escape, so I read a lot of different genres. Right now I'm enjoying Nova Nelson's Eastwind Witches series. Light, funny, easy to read, and an enjoyable world to escape into. I would like to hear from other members about their "escape books" - which books take you away to some place you enjoy visiting for a while?

Hi, Jon, I'm new here, too. I saw you mentioned you like to read books based on real events. I've never read Anne of Green Gables. Heard a lot about it, of course, but it's one of those that I wonder if I missed the boat -

I admire you for reading in a language that is not your native tongue. I studied Spanish and French years ago when I was in school and have always intended to take classes again in at least one language. I find that reading right before I go to sleep is optimal for me. That way I read almost every day (unless I am too sleepy) and often I read longer than I intended if the book is really interesting. Everyone has their own preferred method. Nice to "meet" you.
