R20: Team #2 ~ Too Hot to Handle

I'm visiting my family in Georgia so I won't be checking too often for the next week. It may be a bit before I finish my UF book but I'll be sure to request stamps promptly!!

Congrats on the new job, Katharine and hopefully things slow down soon!!

When Death Knocks by S.C. Stokes
Shelf: MPG Urban Fantasy
Date read: 4/4
Rating: ★★★★
Review: Kasey is still trying to figure out a way to stop her vision of the destruction of New York City. When her vision repeats from the top of a currently under construction high rise, she realizes that the new building remains standing while all of the surrounding buildings collapse. An investigation into the building leads her to another vision of the head of the construction company being murdered. She tries her best to protect the arrogant man while figuring out who wants him dead.
Kasey has finally settled in her job at the NYPD, and I was glad to see her choose to stay when given the option to return to the coroner's office. She's definitely getting better at her investigative skills, but I'm surprised she hasn't started dedicating time to improving her magic since the most powerful of the remaining evil wizards is still free. I'm still confused about how the pieces of the puzzle that is the upcoming disaster fit together, but I'm confident it will come together eventually.
Great urban fantasy read with plenty of action and amazing characters. I look forward to continuing the series.

That sounds like a good one, Deanna. I'll have to take a look :)
I'll post my UF review shortly.

We now have an updated BINGO card with a stamp on 'series to finish' and 'shapeshifter(s)'.

Shades of Hate by K.N. Banet
Series: Jacky Leon #5
Shelf #6: urban fantasy (shelved by 24 people)
Read: 3 Apr
Rating: ✮✮✮✮½
My Review:
In Shades of Hate, Jacky's being tested in many different ways. For many years she was someone who lived a quiet, "ordinary" life, now the changes are coming a very rapid pace.
They saw my truth, and they were going to have it forever. My privacy had been ripped away from me, and there was nothing that could get it back. The biggest change - werecats are outed. Her family continues to wonder how she went from being uncharacteristically uninvolved to constantly in the middle of every mess. Their feelings for her, as a member of their family, are revealed more and more in each installment and it's a joy to watch her shock as she realizes they truly are there for her, no matter what. Her circle continues to grow, all of which is helping her take charge of her new position and her feelings.
I'm thrilled I went back to book 2 because this series has become one of my must-buys. While Jacky may seem lost at times, she's always ready to do what's right no matter the blowback. And, if there is blowback, she takes responsibility and stands her ground. I'm very anxious for the next big "coming out party" that is bound to happen sooner rather than later. Zuri's part in this installment made me like her all the more. I recommend this series to all UF (+some romance) fans. July can't get here soon enough ~ I want Royal Pawn now!

Msg. 10 is updated with all our reads. @Katharine - you mentioned last week that you would post 3 reviews but you only posted two (Auto-buy is still left.) No rush, just in case you thought you had posted them all. :)
I'll be starting my UF book tonight. Now I'm undecided if to start the book I thought I would or something else...decisions, decisions!!

Shelf #7 ~ 7 April: Magic
DIRECT LINK(s) ~ Magic (+ SOS' magic)
I’ll pop back later with my book choice.

Hope y'all are doing well! Happy Reading!

Not yet. It's going to be bat crap crazy for awhile since we have something of a merge going on and about tripling the number of doctors in the clinic and not having everything we need from their old records and then not being able to schedule any patients until another department gets their butts in gear. Not to mention there are only 3 of us to take care of all of this. It will smooth out, but not soon enough.

I'm 3/4 done with my UF book - Part-Time Gods- but I'm so mad at the MC that I'm taking a break...probably will finish it by tomorrow.

Ick! Sounds like quite the tornado of events. Having worked many years managing doctors' offices, I feel for ya! Hang in there and try not to burn out before things really get goin’.

Bounty Hunters and Black Magic by Kristen Banet
Series: Witch of the Wild West #1
Shelf #7: Magic (shelved by 14 people)
Read: 8 April
Rating: ★★★½
My Review:
A wild magic witch was deemed completely uncontrollable by society, her magic a sign of her unforgiving will and an inability to control herself. The few born were normally locked away in asylums, considered too dangerous.Bounty Hunters and Black Magic introduces us to Adayln Lovett (Addy), a widow and wild magic witch, the witch of Redstone. Redstone is a supe town with no humans. When we meet Addy, she's testing a spell to banish a demon. She's after the one that killed her husband, William, and attacked her town. While her spell works, she can't celebrate her achievement or the hard work needed because her method is forbidden.
Except her. She always had too much of an indomitable will.
Her first night back in Redstone she comes face to face with two bounty hunters (½ hellhound, ½ wolf shifter Remington "Remy" Coldwell and ½ nephilim Easton Black). Addy finds out they're there for the demons they know will soon come hunting for her and looking to work together. Maxwell, a US Marshall, warlock and close friend of her late husband, is not happy about the prospect, but he knows he can't control Addy - no one can. She's spent a year in mourning and is ready to get back into the world and in the sheets with those intriguing bounty hunters. She's tough, more than able to take care of herself, except when her wild magic fizzes out, and determined to do what no other man has done since William's death - keep Redstone safe.
❝ She does nothing quietly. If she could, she’d barrel through life like a fucking tornado. ❞The RH consists of two, at the moment, but more are sure to follow in future installments. I'm fascinated by Valen (unknown Russian Supe) who runs the saloon and Tobias (shaman) seems to be nice though he spent the majority of this installment out of town he's back now and ready to proclaim his love for Addy. Maxwell is a question mark for me. He seems like a nice guy who wants to honor his promise to William to keep Addy safe (as safe as any man can) and I'm curious about his family and the story there, but his position in much of the story was a bit awkward. Then there was the surprise addition/reunion at the end ... (view spoiler)
The town was a big part of what I liked about this book. Redstone is awesome! Vampiric working girls, a mysteriously magical saloon owner, wereanimals (cats and wolves) who protect/watch over one another during the new and full moons respectively, magic and mayhem ... such a wonderful variety of supes set within a small, western town backdrop. Fun! I liked the alternating POV, which doesn't always work for me. I'm glad I bought books 1-2 at the same time because I was made aware they're both now unavailable. Maybe the author has removed them to revamp them and re-release. Either way, I plan to read book 2, Werewolves and Wranglers to see how things progress.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

I liked book 1 more than the others , but overall a fun, quick read. Hope you enjoy it.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Steph. Big hug to you and your family.

Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione
Series: Demonica #1
Shelf: Auto-Buy
Date finished: 3/28/21
Rating: 4 stars
Review: First of all...whew! I needed a cold shower after all the steamy sex in the storyline.
Tayla is the MC and wakes up in UGH...Underworld General Hospital, a hospital run by sups and owned by demons. Her doctor is heart-poundingly, evilly gorgeous and, of course, she has to kill him as soon as she gets the chance. He's attracted to her too. Can she dispose of him? Do demons have a softer side?
Lots of twists and turns give us our answer. I could review the books I've read all day long, but I hate doing it because I don't want to give anything away because once I start, I keep rambling. Hence, my reviews are always short. Let's just say I was hesitant about this book before I tried it but I'm sure glad I gave it a try!

Hahahaha!! I know! I stopped reading this author because of the plot in one of the later books but I love this one! I'll probably re-read it one of these days if I can find it audio.

I really liked that series, Katharine. I’d forgotten about the hotness, but when I read my review I saw musta been hot enough for me to comment on it 😏
Thanks, Sandra. Yeah, the new book page is not great for BSB 😤 and, it’ll take some getting used to, for sure.

Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris
Series: Sookie Stackhouse #4
Shelf: UF
Finished: 4/6/21
Rating: 3.5 stars
I'm confused about how I feel about this series. At times I really enjoy it; other times I don't think I'm going to continue. I haven't seen the TV series, so I can't comment on the differences (likely)/strong similarities (less likely). I found this installment in the series to be more entertaining and page-turning than the first three and I think I'll give the next one a try after I knock out more of my TBR that's been waiting for me for years. :P

I've been in a re-reading binge so I haven't finished my UF book yet. I'll try to finish it tonight.
I still haven't decided what to read for magic. I have a book that works which I have to read this week but I was "saving" for a couple of more difficult shelves. I'll see if one of those it's called on Wed. and if not, I'll use this book for magic. (I can catch up quickly!)

It's just total crap!!!!!!!
There's a lot of white on my big screen, lots more clicking to get to where I need to go as a librarian, and what's with the hiding the edition format & isbn/asins?
It's obviously aimed at the mobile version, but a lot of mobile users use the ordinary site because there's a lot of features that don't show up on the mobile site.

I actually like the cleaner look but I went I sent my feedback, I wrote a long paragraph on the shelves issue.

Shelf #6: Urban Fantasy (shelved by 143 readers)
Date finished/Rating: 4/12/21 ★★½
Review: This series is about a spoiled rich girl and her overbearing father and the lengths they go to one up each other. I know I'm supposed to like Opal because she's "fighting for her freedom" (rolls eyes) but she's really throwing a temper tantrum to get her daddy to notice her.
I couldn't STAND HER, because you see, she's JUST LIKE HER FATHER. She's a proud know-it-all who just wants to get her way no matter how many people she tramples on her way.
Maybe in a year or two I won't be so mad and read the next book but it's likely this is it for me and this series.

I've been reading a lot of UF and PNR for the last couple of weeks so I think I'll take a break for a bit and read something else. Maybe a rom com or something funny...

Happy Shelf Day, Hotties!
#8: Kick-Ass Heroine ~ Kick Ass Heroine
I'll be back in a bit with my book choice.

Slouch Witch by Helen Harper
Shelf: MPG Magic
Date read: 4/9
Rating: ★★★★
Review: Ivy Wilde takes laziness to a whole new level. Working just enough hours driving a cab to cover her expenses, she much prefers to watch tv, eat junk food, and argue with her cat. Then one morning while feeding her neighbor's familiar, Ivy is accidentally bound to Raphael Winter as his new apprentice in her neighbor's place. The head of the Holy Order of Magical Enlightenment claims the bound can't possibly be undone for 100 days. Soon Ivy and Raphael are called to locate a missing scepter that was stolen from the order library. The missing object leads to murdered wizards as the unlikely pair try to learn to work together to solve the mysteries.
Ivy's laziness was a bit annoying at times, but once she was paired with Raphael the dynamic between the two was highly entertaining. The plot was well paced, and the world was well thought out. I enjoyed it enough that I continued on and read the rest of the series as well. I'm looking forward to trying out more series by this author as well. 4 stars

Man, I'm so anxious for Jacky #6! That series quickly became a favorite of mine. Enjoy!

Storm Cursed by Patricia Briggs
Shelf #5: Auto-buy (shelved by 2 readers)
Date finished/Rating: 4/2/21 ★★★★
Review: Wow, it's been a while since I read a Mercy Thompson book! I thought I was going to be totally lost but important developments of pertinent books were mentioned (in a very organic way) so that I could remember what was going on.
I really enjoyed this book. Ms. Briggs has a way of bringing up the danger in a way that you feel there's not guarantee that everybody will get out of alive (even though you know they will.) Witches were the foes this time around and they were SCARY!! The development on Elizaveta (an important secondary character since the beginning) was very unexpected. I foresaw how things ended up and understood the necessity but still felt terribly for Adam.
It was also interesting to see the werewolves navigating their "coming out" and the relationship with humans. I'm expecting lots of conflict to come out of that quarter!!
I have the feeling though that I'll go back and start re-reading this series. There's so much richness to the characters and the stories!
