Hi Jackie I'm going to be on holiday for a couple of weeks from Sunday, but we can certainly look at this when I get back!
If anyone else would like to read Sister of the Bride with Jackie, please post here. :)
I looked at the other thread & I do own Swallows and Amazons & would love to read it at some point.
The children's/YA book I am intending to read this year is Under the Mountain by the late Kiwi author Maurice Gee. it just squeaks into our time period. If anyone else was wanting to read with me I could certainly set up a buddy read. For me, it is showing on Amazon. A little pricey for such a short book though.

Would Anne of Green Gables fit the criteria as that is another favourite of mine.

Hi Anne
Anne of Green Gables would very definitely fit - first published 1908. & the entire set of Anne books was free on Amazon.
This could be fun! What does everyone think?

ETA: the first Swallows and Amazons is free online so I would read that one for sure. It looks very good and then there is an entire series afterwards, yay!
I love retro YA! I wish I could do buddy/group reads but the SR in my name means Slow Reader and I just can't. But I love this thread and will no doubt get great recs and discussions about whatever you guys read.

I read & loved some of these books when a child. I do own Little House on the Prairie & would love to reread that one.
I am going away for a couple of weeks holiday tomorrow, but we can collect ideas & look at them when I am back home. :)

FYI, I made a children's and YA bookshelf for the group just to consolidate what has already been read in the past (but that doesn't mean re-reads can't happen!)

Let me know if I missed any.

& the list looks really good, Cindy.
My thoughts so far are that we should do Sister of the Bride first - since this was Jackie's idea. Would the 20th of July suit you, Jackie & Ellen?
Then maybe we could look at Swallows and Amazons for the 5th of August?
If there is a big swell of interest for Anne or Little House on the Prairie we can change that when I am back from holiday.
I don't want to overload myself too much as I am still reading the Poldark series (started during the first book pool) :)

I have just finished reading Under The Mountain / Maurice Gee. It has taken a while to get the book as my local library has this habit of withdrawing by age of book rather than exercising more important retention criteria - NZ author, classic, still being read by patrons ...
Surprisingly, after being requested to purchase, the book got a list of reserves on it as long as your arm while in the 'on order' status!
Now, what did I think of the book.
It was just wonderful reliving the story of the children's adventures with the Wilberforces through the volcanic caves of Auckland. The excitement and suspense was just as I remembered as my kids and I sat in front of the TV each week. Loved it!
I could still visualise the TV series which I have found I can stream through NZ On Screen. This is the 1981 series.

That must be so annoying! Age of books is a criteria at my local library but they do keep books that are still being read!
I enjoyed this one as well! Loved the kiwi touches.
