2021 Read-a-Thon #1: Team Daisy
I read Fireheart Tiger which is just over 100 pages so I'll count it. I've put it in under LGBT+ love story.
The weather is warming up here (only in the -30C range!) so I am taking my daughters out to spend some birthday money this afternoon. Planning on finishing Legend and starting something else.
Sarah wrote: "The weather is warming up here (only in the -30C range!) so I am taking my daughters out to spend some birthday money this afternoon. Planning on finishing Legend and starting someth..."Brrr! It's warmed up here to 5C so now we have lots of rain.
Its about 2C or 36F this side but icy and slightly treacherous for walking after all the sleet yesterday. Plugging away on pages as I clean today. Really hoping to finish The Burning God today but it is a brutal ending to the trilogy so far.
We are unseasonably cold here now. Had an ice storm this week and snow predicted for tomorrow. The kids have been out of school since Wednesday, are out tomorrow for Presidents Day, and high schoolers scheduled for virtual days We'd and Thursday. My son is starting to get a bit of cabin fever.I am off work tomorrow for a continuing education day- looks like I picked a good day for it. I spread it out over the weekend, so I only have to do about 3-4 hours tomorrow, leaving me more time to read!
I a, staring Hound of the Baskervilles and added to spreadsheet. I am working my way through Sherlock Holmes
Finished another short book, Fangirl, Vol. 1: The Manga which was so cute. I've out it down for roommates who aren't romantically involved. I will probably go and find something normal length to read now, so that's my spurt of productivity over for a few days.Oh I think I have two hours left of my audiobook so can finish that while working and count it for another prompt.
My first check in of today. Currently reading
. It's a longer book, 480 pages. I just concentrated on reading today. I've been wanting to read it so I'm going for it.
I'm in California so have NO ability to complain about temperatures compared to so many of you! It has been very windy today though, so a good excuse to stay in and read.I am working on Emerald Green for our other matching cover (decent chance I'll finish that up today) and I just started The Color Purple on audio.
Kathy Jo wrote: "We are unseasonably cold here now. Had an ice storm this week and snow predicted for tomorrow. School buses are cancelled at -45C but school is still on.
It's crazy!
Just finished Legend and am adding it to the "friends to lovers". But they are only 'lovers' as is appropriate for grade 8! haha
My parents are in Northern Minnesota, so I've been hearing a lot about the cold temps there. It's been cold here for Seattle, but it's 1C, so nothing like you're seeing!I finished You Should See Me in a Crown on audio and slotted it into 2 YA rom coms since we don't have any others on the list. There's a few other spots it can go too.
I think my next listen will be Meaty, so I need to figure out where it can go.
I finished Emerald Green and filled it in for the second matching cover. I highlighted that line blue as well since we have two.
For some reason I thought we started today and not yesterday, whoops. I finished Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson today and it fits for the “activity you consider self care” with the knitting. I started Saga, Vol. 2 this evening as well.
I finished Aftershocks. I struggled a bit with where to fit it because small parts fit different prompts, but I wanted a better overall fit - I went with spans 10 years because she talks about different parts of her life birth through age 28 as well as covering some earlier family/country history.
I finished The Burning God and put it for one of the three books that do not feature romantic love. We are doing well!
I needed something a little lighter after a couple hours listening to The Color Purple so I added Foolish Hearts. It will work for a few different things, but it looks like it will be the most help for YA RomCom or connected to Shakespeare since it's a romcom that includes students putting on a Shakespeare play.
Edit - I finished this and put it in for our second YA RomCom since nothing else was slated for that category.
I finished my audiobook of The Project, kinda got a bit bored with it, not as good as Sadie by a longshot! I've put it down for a book with P in the title for now.
I finished The Color Purple and put it in for the third book that covers more than 10 years, but it can certainly work for other things as well.I'm hoping to finish Betty and Surviving Savannah in the next day or two or so.
Betty - a character mentions Shakespeare which I think could satisfy a connection Shakespeare
Surviving Savanah - travel (not such good travel given that the ship sinks with heavy casualties, but they were traveling), would also work for friendship themes.
I plan to start A Song of Wraiths and Ruin and This Is My America in the next few days as well.

Deborah, are you enjoying The Color Purple?

I laughed at your "not good travel" comment!
Barbara wrote: "I just finished Little Women!"Great! How did you like it? I loved it when I read it (I think in 7th grade or so), but worry it wouldn't hold up.
It looks like you haven't put it in the tracking tab of the spreadsheet, but there are lots of options for it on the planning tab. Let me know if you want me to put it in the spreadsheet (based on your earlier comment) and if so if you have any preferences for where to put it (neither warm and fuzzy nor elderly character have many options now, so one of those could be a good fit).
I finished Citizen: An American Lyric and put it in for the 3rd book that doesn't feature a love story. The only one I've figured out that might work for Meaty is "debut author", but I might find another option as I keep listening.
I'm going to start Leaving Atlanta for my next physical book, which from the synopsis would work for "starts with L" or "coming of age".

Hi, Traci!
I thought the captain was in charge of it. Could you please do and let me know what to do next time? I am really playing safe here, because I don't want to mess anything up, however I am willing to learn (:
By the way, I loved the book! It reminded me of when I first read Pollyanna, which I also love!

Glad to hear you loved it. I also loved Pollyanna back in the day! I think the only rereads I've done from books I read when younger are Anne of Green Gables and The Giver. Maybe I should try some more - there are just so many new books!
Anyone can slot books in on the spreadsheet, but I'm happy to do so.
If you want to add your own books to the tracking tab, you can just put the title under your name in the row prompt and add an x in the complete column.
We're also highlighting the book in the tracking tab and moving it in the planning tab, but I've been trying to keep an eye on these, so no need to do that part.

I am listening to Jane Eyre which I read a few years ago. I would like to re-read a few books, specially those I rated with 5 stars.
Thanks for doing the spreadsheet. I am playing UNO in another group, and I am so used to let the captains arrange how the books will be used that I didn't want to make a mess on our spreadsheet. I really appreciate your help, but from now on I will add the books on the second tab (I just did it with Jane Eyre :D)

Sherri - I meant to ask and forgot - What did you think of this? It's one of the books I'm considering for the BRRH prompt of a SFF anthology edited by a person of color.Traci, I used this book for that exact same challenge. Anthologies & Short Stories are not my favorite genre. Some of the stories are my favorite type of SF. The short story would end & I wanted more. The stories didn't interconnect. I understand the theory behind the collection but felt it was a 3 star read. I loved Kindred but hadn't
read any other of her books.I hope this helped.

Thanks. I've found I really like short stories lately, but only if they feel complete. I often feel a little odd asking people what they thought since everyone has different tastes, but good to hear your thoughts. I won't take it off my list, but will probably just read whichever comes first from the library!

I am going to reread Anne of Green Gables this year. I haven't read any of them in about 15 years. My copies came from my Oma and were old and falling apart when she passed them to me.
No finishes for me today but should complete my audio book tomorrow. Pages read were added to the spreadsheet.
Finished Pretty Little Wife! So good! Ignored my family for most of the Family Day holiday today! Added it to 'books with the letter p"

Re The Color Purple - Enjoying always feels like a hard term to use when a book deals with heavy topics of abuse and such, but I did think it was a great read. I unintentionally wound up reading both The Color Purple and Betty the same week and while I think both are well written, there are a lot of similarities in the abuse against women which was poor planning on my part! Hopefully I can get in some lighter reads this week!
I finished Surviving Savannah and I put it in for the friendship theme since I think travel is covered with Kathy Jo's Death on the Nile. I will most likely finish up Betty on audio tomorrow and then figure out what I'm starting next!
Did not finish anything yesterday, but updated my page count. I should finish Saga today. I feel like I could count it for one of the pet prompts as one of the characters sidekicks is a big cat who can tell if people are lying. What do you all think??
Going to start The Midnight Library, it's on a list of books with a pet cat?!Might have to do something other than reading today...
Sarah wrote: "Going to start The Midnight Library, it's on a list of books with a pet cat?!Might have to do something other than reading today..."
Yes, there is definitely a pet cat!
I completed The Purpose of Power: How We Come Together When We Fall Apart. I'm going put it in for A book with themes related to hope, self-love, or self-respect as it seemed hopeful to me that people will come together at some point and using self-love and self-respect to start movements for a cause. Next up, I will take on a short cozy that I need to read for another challenge.
I finished Meaty and put it in for debut author. I have multiple friends who loved her more recent essay collections, and I could get this one immediately on audio, but I have to say, while I liked a few of the essays, as a whole, it wasn't my cup of tea. I may try a later collection at another time (I also have a friend who didn't like this one much but loved her most recent). I'm going to start Take a Hint, Dani Brown because I need something light-hearted. It'll take longer than my last few since it's no longer the long weekend, but it would fit for heart on cover or warm and fuzzy. Maybe fresh start too.
Yum to pancakes! I made french toast to ease the pain of the new work week!I finished Betty and put it in for one of our connected to Shakespeare reads. I flipped back to make sure I didn't misremember there being a connection and the characters are talking about Romeo and Juliet at one point!
I'm just starting This Is My America - not sure where it will fit in at this point.
Deborah wrote: "Barbara wrote: "Deborah wrote: "I'm in California so have NO ability to complain about temperatures compared to so many of you! I know it is a classic and this year I am trying to pick a few classical ones to balance with biographies and novels, and this one is on my list, but I didn't know it is such a sad story.
Thanks for letting me know, I am ready to cry rivers.
Ellie wrote: "Had a bit of a day today, so not much reading done. At least I got to eat some yummy pancakes."Way to look on the bright side! I'm having a bit of a day too, but that means I'm getting annoyed with work and taking reading breaks.
Happy Pancake Day! I managed to eat some leftover from the weekend. I get the lemon and sugar thing but I'm from Vermont and maple will always win.My cozy was super quick. I'm putting it as one of the warm and fuzzy books because it was set in a coffee shop during the holidays with lots of hot foamy drinks and non stop descriptions of Christmas cookies and gingerbread.
Barbara wrote: "Deborah wrote: "Barbara wrote: "Deborah wrote: "I'm in California so have NO ability to complain about temperatures compared to so many of you! It has been very windy today though, so a good excuse..."It definitely will break the heart! We've been laughing (to keep from crying) because our classics buddy read group picked Call of the Wild, The Color of Purple and Charlotte's Web for our first three reads of the year and all are rather tough/sad reads, though in different ways! It wasn't intentional!
It was quite the work day for me too, but I have been able to take some reading breaks and get some audio book listening in along the way.
I think I'll be set up to finish This Is My America tomorrow. I'll be starting A Song of Wraiths and Ruin tomorrow.
Well, I ended up staying up later than anticipated to finish my book. Slotted Leaving Atlanta into "book that starts with L", though there are some other places it can be moved. The three other physical books I have sitting here to read right now are all short story collections, so I have no clue yet where whatever I start tomorrow will fit.
I finished Saga, Vol. 2 last night and decided Lying Cat definitely counts as a pet so I marked it there on the spreadsheet. I’m doing a lot of driving today and listening to The Less People Know About Us: A Mystery of Betrayal, Family Secrets, and Stolen Identity so I will hopefully get that finished today.
Books mentioned in this topic

Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America (other topics)
The Girl with the Louding Voice (other topics)
Fangirl, Vol. 1: The Manga (other topics)

I thought I posted this earlier, but it seems I just typed it, but didn't actually hit 'post'.
I did finish Crimson Hearts. I wound up putting it in for heart on the cover because the other categories where it works [friendship theme, debut author, stage of life (high school), female author] have more than enough possibilities checked. It can be moved around as needed. :)
I need to make some progress on Surviving Savannah for a halfway buddy read chat on Monday and then will continue on with Emerald Green.
