YA? Fantasy series. Boy finds a dragon hatchling, rescues it from a group of boys on the road, tries to return it to its nest by climbing a cliff. Medieval world with sword fighting? Browsed around 2005.

So I remember browsing on Amazon a number of years ago (probably ~15 years so about 2005 maybe). At the time I was just browsing and reading the book descriptions and the "Look Inside" previews, so the plot details I remember come right at the beginning of the book. I also read about a number of books so I hope I am not mixing up details, but I will do my best to describe the little I recall. The book is set in a fantasy world, I THINK it was set in a sort of medieval style society. Think sword fighting, and no electricity. I remember there was a boy who was walking down a road and saw a bunch of other boys in a circle around something. At first he thought it must be a dog that they were beating but it turned out as he got nearer, that it was actually a dragon hatchling. After the boys left ( I can't remember how he got rid of them), he attempted to carry the dragon hatchling back up to its nest on top of a nearby cliff. I remember the book describing him struggling to hold on to the struggling baby while he was climbing and that he sort of snapped at the hatchling that he was trying to help. That is where the preview ended. I know it isn't a lot to go on and I am not sure why this preview has been so stuck in my mind for the last 15 years. It was the first book in a series. There were maybe 3 books in it (possibly more?).

I also feel like this may not be a super well known book. I am decently well read in terms of well-known dragon books so I can narrow down the field a bit to save time. It was not Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, or Inheritance (I am fairly certain half that series was published after the fact anyway). It was also not any of the Dragons of Pern novels that I know of (I have read a number of them. Besides, I already knew about the Pern novels at the time so it would taken note of it. Also in Pern novels, dragons do not live in the wild, only fire lizards, and this book was definitely not about fire lizards). It was also not any of the Dragon Keeper novels by Donita K Paul. Any help would be greatly appreciated, this has been bugging me for so long!

Was the boy a teenager or a younger child?

You're welcome. Most people only scan the headers, so it's helpful to add lots of details and keywords (no spoilers) to the header.

I believe he was young adult age (but honestly my memory is super sketchy on it at this point after so long and with only a preview to refer to). Certainly old enough to be able to scale a fairly tall cliff with a struggling dragonette.

I'm sorry! I only just now realized my response to your question was attached to someone else's response!

I am fairly certain he was a young adult, though again, it was awhile ago. He was old enough and strong enough to scale a decently tall cliff while also holding a struggling dragonette.
