hannah J.R.R Tolkien is one of THE most influential writers of the 20th century. His work is simply amazing, his characters were rich with detail and his story line was brilliant.
However most of his characters were male. I think this is a flaw because it doesn't portray that women are also brave and caring and wise like many of the peoples who roam Middle Earth. Should Arwen played a bigger role in the story? yes. In the movies she had to have more involvement with story but really she should of had it in the book in the first place.

hannah what do you think @Storm :)

Bella Trak I think that since Tolkien had been in the WWI in the trenches, he experienced mostly the men fighting, and not much of the women's part, and usually what an author experiences, he/she writes. Therefore, most of Tolkien's characters were male.
I also don't think that gender really matters. Frodo would still be Frodo, if he was male or female. It doesn't really concern me much, since he included Eoywn. Eoywn shows that he wasn't prejudiced, since she is one of the best female characters I have ever encountered in fiction.
Another point is that Tolkien's universe took place in a medieval inspired world. Women weren't allowed to take much part in medieval times, therefore female characters in Middle earth are limited.
I hope this helped to explain some of my reasonings on this question. ;)
