US crime/thriller writer probably 1990s - i read it sometime before 2010 i think
the hero is threatened by an anonymous baddie and told he must commit suicide or his family will be killed. He can't work out what the motive is or what he has done to deserve this but decides to fake his suicide to give him time to investigate. I think he pretends to drown himself and then goes undercover to find out who the villain is.
The author (male) has written other books including serial killer type stuff but i don't remember those book titles either or his name(s)

Hi Kris, Happy moment of inspiration while asleep - the name John Katzenbach popped into my head. Had looked through a complete A-Z of US Crime Writers and hadn't seen it! The book is "The Analyst" and i must have read it early 2000's. Very interesting plot and pretty well written.
