Vampire Romances With Black Heroines: A Goodreads List
date
newest »

As an aside, I've recently decided to stop using the term PNR because it erases the fact that 'Paranormal' is an element of Fantasy so that most people don't include it. Also, paranormal romance is urban fantasy - but with a stronger or primary romance element so calling it urban fantasy romance makes much more sense. What is the difference to you?

It is short, isn't it?
So, I wrote a blog post (https://wp.me/pasvO2-3sg) so I could give some vampire romance recs—and, yes, created a Goodreads list so I could get some.
Thanks for yours. I've read or at least seen some of them, but not all of them.
As for demon or whatever romances with Black heroines, those are other lists too. (What can I say? I don't like my food or romance touching. 🤷🏽♀️) Well, shifter romances with Black heroines isn't another list—I'm not a fan of shifter romances.
Anyway, the difference between paranormal romance and urban fantasy romance? As a reader, I expect urban fantasy romance to have world-building. Paranormal romance, not so much.
Don't get me started on science fiction romances…
Okay, here's a science fiction romance with a Black woman and a half-White, half-Japanese vampire: Vampire Detective Midnight.
And an urban fantasy romance with a Black woman and an English vampire: The Last Vampire: Book One.
And, soon to be added to the list, a paranormal romance with a Black woman and an Asian—Korean?—vampire: Chaste Blood.
Hmm. What was the difference again?

You "don't like my food or romance touching." What does that mean? 🤔
As for shifters - you are really missing out lol! Shifters, in general, overtook vampires for me as top of the list so to speak and I think (I hazzard a guess from what I've seen in my travels anyway) that there are a lot more of them with black FMCs out there than vampire stories. Some of my favourite books overall are shifter stories, in part because of the ones I've read, they are more versatile.
As for worldbuilding, I get what you mean. I just don't differentiate between them, especially as I've read tons of 'PNR' that have plenty of world-building including some series where the world is the reason I originally wanted to read and then continued to read them more than the romance side of them. (And some UF where the WB is shoddy).
I also have read this fantastic trilogy that was equal parts fantasy and romance and has a black FMC (well the first two have the same one, the third one was asian but with a black woman in the MMCs backstory and is a continuation of the overall plot) but was about necromancers. HIGHLY recommend if that tickles your fancy, with the added bonus that it has a racially diverse cast overall not just a couple of POC FMCs.

PS: Just so you know, this list is for paranormal romances, not to be confused with urban fantasy romances. That's another list.
