Dancer's Flame

Rate this book
With the help of a god, Azrael and Isela exposed a conspiracy and altered the world’s balance of power. But for Azrael, victory comes with dangerous new powers he can't control. Will accepting his future mean losing everything he’s gained — his allies, his territory, and his consort? Isela’s found a home, purpose and power. But if accepting her new role means giving up the life she’s worked for will the price be too high? When an impossible creature shows up in Prague bearing a dire warning, the search for answers divides them. Now Isela must forge a bond with the power within her while Azrael fights to keep from tearing himself apart. And time is running out. Gods don’t forget or forgive, especially a betrayal from one of their own. Dancer's Flame is a romantic urban fantasy for adult readers and the second book in the Grace Bloods series.

I found this one to me a bit more confusing than book one, slightly chaotic, but I had fun! There’s a lot of new characters and it was hard to keep track of everyone and what was happening simultaneously at different points with all of them, but I still love our main couple and all of their friends and family.

Dancer's Flame is the second book in Silvera's Grace Bloods Series and picks up where the first book, Death's Dancer, left off. I don't want to give too much away from the first book if you haven't read it, but part of the arc of this second book is watching Azrael's and Isela's relationship continue, and evolve, after the happily ever after of that first book. We also learn more about Azrael's cohort and Isela's family.

Here are a few of the things I loved about this book (which are remarkably similar to what I loved about the first one!):
Getting more of the world and the characters I grew to love in the first book. I'm so happy this is a series so I can continue on with them for awhile!
The arc of Azrael's and Isela's relationship. Silvera has said that she writes what she knows, and while she doesn't know what it's like to be in a supernatural relationship, she does know what it's like to be in a long-term relationship, and all of the pros and cons and challenges that go into making that relationship work. Some couples argue about money, Isela and Azrael argue about how to keep each other safe with a variety of supernatural beings trying to kill them. But it boils down to the same elements of communication and trust.
All of the other relationships in the story. There are a LOT of secondary characters, but all of them serve a purpose and have a place within the story, and it's both fun and fascinating to watch as all of those relationships intertwine and evolve, and what that means for the rest of the characters.

DANCER’S FLAME continues Isela and Azrael’s story as they work out how to navigate their new relationship and the changing dynamics of magic in Prague. I have to say I didn’t like this one nearly as much as the first, and a big part of that is that Isela and Azrael spend the majority of the book apart and there was very little of the romance plot included. Another issue is that it seems like the story got overly complicated and certain plot lines were started in the beginning of the book and weren’t picked back up until the very end. This combined with a bunch of new characters, magical creatures, and political machinations made for a lot to keep up with.

On the good side, I still really love Isela and Azrael as individual characters so I at least enjoyed following them on their separate journeys. It was also nice to get some more understanding the gods, the gracebloods, and the necromancers. The last book in the series is actually about Gregor and I’m undecided if I’ll read it since he’s not really a character I like very much.

Content Warning: Isela is still grieving the death of her father

I was delighted when I finally got my hands on Jasmine Silvera’s second book and couldn’t wait to read it. As the parent of two small Littles though it is hard to find uninterrupted “me” time to enjoy a book. Out of desperation one Saturday I handed my phone to my oldest as a distraction so she would just let me read in peace. I was able to read and it was a beautiful thing. However, I paid for it later when I had to delete over 200 selfie shots of my 4 year-old’s forehead. (!) Fortunately the book was well worth it!

Another winner from Mrs. Silvera! I continue to appreciate Isela and Azrael's growth as people and their city's increasing sense of family and community. Like the previous book, I thought this one could use a tad more copy editing. But it's not going to distract me from continuing to binge the series.

I love Jasmine Silvera's work. I read her first book "Death's Dancer" and it's quality kept me from giving up on Kindle Unlimited as a place to find books I like.

These books are well grounded in movement. Silvera understands and describes dance and music. She physically brings the reader into the action by describing the feeling of motion instead of the visuals of motion.

The fantasy elements are interesting and well thought out. I want more from the world Sivera created as she blends a unique magical system with technology.

"Death's Dancer" is a complete story lacking in loose ends. Knowing this, I wasn't sure what Silvera could give me in "Dancer's Flames": turns out there is a lot more to explore.

In this book Silvera slows down and continues to develop and intertwine reveals that feel rushed and contrived in the first book. She brings all the elements in to tell a new story that still feels connected to the first book.

The pacing is far better in this book than the first one. Nothing feels prolonged or rushed, everything moves at what seems like "the right speed".

At the end, I wondered about Yana's fate.  Last we'd heard from her she hated Isla and has successfully bonded with a God.  Is the God still with her and does she still thirst for vengeance? I would have liked a chapter from Yana's perspective.  What does she think about her survival and where she's going from here?  She shouldn't be treated as a prop to drive action. I suspect that I'll learn more about her in Grace Bloods #3, so it's a very minor quibble.

I don't mind the romantic elements in this series. While I'm not here for the "kissing bits" I appreciate that the scenes feel earned and are used to drive the story forward instead of a stopping point.

The love interest becomes more interesting in this second book, but I'm never going to be his biggest fan. Kudos to Silvera. She did the same thing I hated in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 except when she did it, I thought it fit in with everything else going on and she didn't waste my time making me explore the tired elements.

This book has everything a fantasy/romance/action book needs. Looking forward to a long and prolific career for her.

Dancer's Flame, Grace Bloods: Book 2, Jasmine Silvera

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: General Fiction (adult), Sci-fi and Fantasy
I loved the first book in this series, but found it a little harder to connect with this one. There is so much going on, so many new characters and its such an unusual world. I feel its one of those stories where once all parts are out and I do a back to back reading session I'll get so much more from it, having learned more about the world setting. This has Gods ( definitely plural) who aren't necessarily benign or even easy to understand, Necromancers who can live thousands of years, the retinue of assorted supernaturals each necromancer has accrued over time, witches, werewolves, no doubt other supernaturals yet to be seen. Oh, and plain old humans....In this story there area couple of new supernaturals, Golems, fitting as its set in Prague and someone that poses a huge threat to everyone even if he doesn't mean to, who of course Isela wants to save and others are keen to kill.
We see more of Isela and Azreal, which is great, I love those two, Gregor, in his usual taciturn protective self, along with some new folk from Azreal's team. Of course nothings going smoothly, and once more supernaturals are threatening Azrael's city, and it culminates in a huge, and at times to me confusing, climax. What's next for the team.
I love that Jasmine has created such a fabulously different world, but it has the downside that its quite intense to read and follow, to understand who is whom, and how they fit into the story. I know though, that once I've fully got to grips this will be a solid five star series.

Stars: Four and a half. The half off is simply because at times the whole story and characters did get a bit confusing, however I know a second read will give me so much more, and I expect I'll pick up on things I missed first reading.

After reading Death's Dancer, I couldn't wait to read this one. I loved it just as much as the first book. I enjoyed going on this crazy adventure with Isela and seeing her character develop and feeling the emotions she felt in certain scenes. I love seeing the relationship between Azreal and Isela grow more deeper. Getting some of the back story of Gregor was cool, and you just know there is more to him, I need to know his whole story. You also get introduced to some new characters that i hope i get to see more of in the next book. I can't say much without giving anything away, but I will say that just like the first book, the author did an awesome job of continuing in making you believe in a world that is filled with mystical beings and creatures without you questioning it, lol. The story was intense and well written. And just like the first book, this book also has a good blend of action, adventure and romance. I can't wait until the third book comes. I need to know how everything is going to end. If you haven't read Death's Dancer then I suggest you do and then read this book right away.

I just love Silvera's language. Her choice of words is so soothing - like picking up a Bronte novel and just kind of sighing every now and then because it sounds so good.

I love love love how Issy and Azrael relate to each other. The moments they're together are my favorite - it's so real and makes me wish the beginning of the novel was more of them exploring together but I totally get that Silvera's choices were necessary for plot and world development. There was plenty of character development, too. I'm so intrigued by Tariq but wish I understood the back story of Gus and Paolo better. I wonder if I missed something in the beginning that would have helped me feel more in the loop.

Regardless, I hate that I have to wait some more for a third novel because you KNOW (maybe haha) Gold is coming back as Izzy's baby and then stuff is going to get cray-cray!

Before you start you must read the first book as this starts right away without much explanation. If you enjoy fantasy, gods, or anything magical you should enjoy this series. It's a complicated tale in modern times, however the language is often dense as the characters are thousands of years old, in Prague. There is an alliance among witches and necromancers, fighting against other necromancers jealous of Isela's abilities among other things. Azrael is a powerful entity, married to the godsdancer Isela who has been possessed by a small god. It's a good thing, sort of, but it causes problems and a bit of humor. For as serious as their issues are I enjoyed the camaraderie among Azrael's protection staff. There is a third book to follow, maybe we get the war and Isela will test her skills. My copy came from Netgalley.

I received a copy of this from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This novel is so fresh with story telling and world building. This is the 2nd novel in the series and I recommend that you read the 1st one before, otherwise you’ll get lost and much of what’s going on won’t make much sense.

Picking up right where the first book left off, Asrael and Isela find themselves in the middle of a coup by a select few of the other necromancers. A few more interesting characters grace the stage and we get to know more about Asrael’s mysterious past. The reader also finds out what Isela in her new shared form, is capable of. Action packed, this book has a war being fought on several fronts, as well as revenge and redemption.

Another great addition to the series. I’ve already picked up the 3rd and I can’t wait to read it.

This a continuation of Isela and Azrael’s story as they navigate their relationship and new powers.

I didn’t like this one as much as the first. Our MCs spend more time apart on separate quests than they do together. Then I felt the story wasn’t wrapped up well. Like what happened to Vanka? What about Kadija and Circe? Like the ending felt like the author just wanted to be done with all this.

Also I’m torn on Isela’s family. They love her but the way they treated her sometimes made me mad. It’s not her fault she doesn’t know the order of things since they didn’t teach her and kept some stuff from her. It was annoying.

Fantastic world building and characters!

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, so I approached this book with high expectations and a bit of fear. You just never know with sequels, right? But this book, you guys... It's so unbelievably good. I could not put it down, but it isn't just that the plot is tight and well paced. She writes characters so well that even the supporting characters are interesting and emotionally compelling. I am so glad that I can go straight into the third book because I want more of this world.

I read the first of this series shortly after it was published and was impressed, but also so disappointed because I couldn’t immediately devour the next in the series. I got smart, and held off picking this up until the third book had been published, and am so very glad that I did. This was excellent, with all of the hints of complexity that the first book held becoming evident - complex world-building and a multi-layered plot that was exciting and taut with tension. I’ve got the third book queued up and will be diving in as soon as I finish here.

While the first book was presented as a paranormal romance, I think this one is a fantasy book with some romance in it. It's a post apocalyptical world that I find well done. Azrael and Isela grow more powerful. Finding out the history of Azrael just makes him more interesting.

Lots of action. I would like to know about the wolves and witches. Also introducing another couple would be good. Maybe with his adopted daughter? Can't wait to see what happens.

Ooo, I thoroughly enjoyed this installment, too. I just love how the characters are developing, and how humanity is smiled upon in ways (and frowned upon in others). What I love most is that Silvera's plots and writing are just so damn engrossing. Nods to historical characters and mythology? Yes, please. I can tell there was lot of research, and yet, it all feels super seamless and naturally included.

Almost sad to start the third book because when I'm done, that means I'll have to wait for her new books to be published.

“I’ve always been a man of words.” He cupped his elbows behind his back. “My first lover was language. In the caress of her sentences, I found ecstasy.”
I enjoyed this installment just as much as the intro. It was great seeing Isela discover her strengths, meeting Azrael’s progeny and learning more about this world.
“Thank you, Isela Vogel. For seeing me as I am. And for wanting me anyway.”

The Grace Bloods series is remarkable, and difficult to define. Although paranormal romance in that it includes the paranormal, the scope and dimension of the plot, characters, and world building is consistent with high fantasy. I cannot recommend this strongly enough.

I really want to know what the "surprise" is. Dare I hope there will be another story to continue it? Or am I dumb and I overlooked what the surprise is? If I didn't, then I do have a theory . . .

I recently finished Dancers Flame, the second book in Jasmine Silvera’s Grace Bloods series. . And now I need more.

Isela is a Godsdancer, the only way to communicate with the gods after the Godswar. Azrael is a necromancer, who are believed to be descended from the gods. After the events in the first book, Death’s Dancer, Isela and Azrael have new powers to learn to control. And some powerful enemies don’t want that to happen.

One of my favorite parts was the defense of the city. It reminded me of a favorite part of a certain movie (not giving more details, because spoilers suck).

If you haven’t, go get these books and read them. I give Dancer’s Flame 4.5 stars.
