What with the world being what it is, these days, I don't have the energy or enthusiasm for anything Deep and Meaningful. I'm looking for sff that is a) has an amusing tone (not necessarily straight-out comedy, but not anything that takes itself too seriously either) and b) was written in the past, say, 20 years (as there's a good chance I've read anything before that). Any thoughts? Thanks!

Clifford Simak novels are really good. He was a grandmaster and his stories are entertaining SciFi. Some darker than others. Way Station would be a good one to sample.

a) Simak wrote more than 20 years ago, b) his stuff is darker than what I was thinking, and c) I don't really find his style appealing. Thanks anyhow.
Death Becomes Her byMichael Anderle. Strange paranormal/science fiction? Funny, kick butt heroine and unique secondary characters; premise is vampires are really changed by aliens and the original changed human. As the second changed by the alien she is going to space to stop space invasion. Oh and the alien implants in her brain. It is a series with lots of off shoots but is free on Kindle if you use the platform. Lots of laughs, inventive cursing, very light fast reading but still incorporates geopolitical issues now and prepping for space travel....starting with shipping containers.... can you tell I use this series when I need escapism reads....

Great list, thanks!
I was going to recommend Qualityland but I see it’s already on Eva’s list. I’ll second it instead. It was a lot of fun.

Thought of a bizarre fantasy short, Wergild: A Heartwarming Tale of Coldblooded Vengeance by Boris L. Slocum. His first science fiction novel came out last year as well.

Soldier of Fortune: A Gideon Quinn Adventure was very light and entertaining. It was a comedy of errors, and gave me the giggles several times. I agree with the T. Kingfisher recs, too. And Howl's Moving Castle was truly excellent!
Paladin's Grace was my favorite by T. Kingfisher. (Sorry- I hit Post before I was done.). Or have you tried Lois McMaster Bujold's novellas beginning with Penric's Demon?

Same with Diana Wynne Jones. I'll keep the others in mind - I appreciate it.
