It was probably published in the 70s or 80s. When the killer is little,he squashes a bunch of kittens (ewww) and grows up to kill a bunch of women. He talks on the phone to another serial killer named Julian. He finally killed this cop's girlfriend,Amy Reed,a reporter,then the cop finds him and kills him. Hope someone knows the title!

He kills the cops gf near the end of the book. I think she was his last victim. I read it in the 80s.
He kills her while she is in the shower. Discovers she is still alive and strangles her.
