Jessica Mulcrone (jessica_mulcrone) | 71 comments Hey ya'll,

Does anyone know of any really good websites or books about pacing? If you've got one specifically about suspense pacing fantastic, but general pacing would be great too. I'm getting revise and resubmits from agents about pacing and streamlining my plot, and I want to get it right (for revising this MS and others in the future), but most of the resources I'm looking at aren't clicking.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Jess

I haven't watched this particular video from Brandon McNulty but I've watched some of his other ones that have been helpful.

Whenever starting a genre project, I find it helpful to have an idea of the "beats" I'll need to hit. Since I write contemporary romance, I use "Romancing the Beat" by Gwen Hayes, in addition to the usual three-act story structure.
In your case, since you're writing suspense/thrillers, I'd recommend checking out genre-specific beat resources: https://fictionformula.com/thriller-s...

I haven't tried this one personally, but it might provide you with somewhere to start!

Additionally, if you're at the revision stage, you might find a programme like Fictionary to be useful. I find it a huge help when it comes to drafting my outlines and ensuring I hit the beats in the right spot.

Best of luck with your project, and Happy Valentine's Day!
