The goal is to read books that have at least one of the same words in the title as another book that you or a teammate reads during the toppler. You can link as few as two books or as many as you like, but the longer the chain is the more points your team will get for it. The toppler will be held Saturday, February 13th, 12noon ET to Saturday, February 20th, 12noon ET.

Countdown to the toppler!

⛓ links must be made using words with 3 or more letters, excluding the words "the" and "and"
⛓ work together as a team
⛓ books must be linked to another book to count towards chain - 2 book minimum
⛓ can not have three books linked to the same book - splitting one chain into two or more chains (ask if you need clarification of this rule)
⛓ can have as may chains as you want going at one time
⛓ can link to beginning or end of chain
⛓ linked words must be exactly the same (no root words, imbedding, plurals, etc)
⛓ subtitles and series names do not count

1st 4 books in the chain = 5 points per book
books # 5-8 in chain = 10 points each
book # 9 and beyond in chain = 15 points each

Example:
First person reads ->The Lightning Thief -> next person reads The Book Thief -> then The Book of Lost Friends -> then The Book of Lost Names -> then The Girls with No Names -> The next person's book should have "girls" or "names" in the title to continue the chain.

If someone had book with the word "lightning" or "thief", they could link it to the first book. - It doesn't matter if you link to the beginning or end of a chain, but you can't link to the middle causing a split in the chain.

You may reorder books at any time, until the final reporting, to create longer chains for more points. The order in which the books are read does not matter. Be careful though... if a book in the middle of your chain is not finished on time it will break your chain.

Kristie | 19136 comments Rules:
1. Books must be started and finished in the specified time period to qualify.
2. You may read any format - paperback, hardcover, ebook, or audiobook.
3. Each book must be at least 175 pages, based on the version you are reading. For audiobooks & ebooks use the page numbers for the first physical edition that comes up on the GR page. If there is no physical edition to confirm page length, audiobooks over 6 hours will qualify as will ebooks over 200 pages.
4. Graphic novels do not count.
5. Words must be in the title. Subtitles or series names do not count.

Please do not add gifs and pics to the threads. It uses up data and makes it difficult for some people to check in more frequently.

Toppler books can count toward the group theme read and/or the monthly or yearly challenge, if they qualify.

If you are sharing your reads on social media, you can let us know what you are reading by adding #tbrtoppler.

***If you are also participating in the yearly challenge, please make sure to update your challenge as you read the books. Please do not report all of your reads at the end of the toppler as that makes a lot of work for Janice. Thank you!***

Clarification please :)

You're saying you can only start linking from the first book of a chain ..... no starting a new chain on the 3rd / 4th etc book?

Lanelle | 4020 comments Does "the word" have to change with each book, or can we use the same word a few times in a row? For example:

The Book Thief
The Time Thief
A Wrinkle in Time
How to Stop Time
How (Not) to Kiss a Toad

That would be a perfect chain, Lanelle. You can use the same word as many times as you like.

If you have:

The Lightning Thief ->
The Book Thief ->
The Book of Lost Friends ->
The Lost Boys ->
The Book of Lost Names ->
The Girls with No Names

You can not, for example, build off The Lost Boys using the word "boys" without creating a new chain, unless your book also contains a word from a linked book, which our example book does not. If you choose to break the chain and add To All the Boys I've Loved Before, there are a couple of ways to do it depending on what other books you want to add, but you can't start with one chain and have two coming off of it. Does that clarify at all or just make it more murky?

Basically, you can't do this:

Kristie | 19136 comments Katrisa -

Do you want to start a thread for team 4? I know you mentioned you could captain if needed. I added myself to your team in case you need any help since it's your first time. Let me know what you need.

message 19: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19136 comments It seems Good reads is having trouble with the "add book" feature as well as the "search books" feature. This should be interesting (and potentially frustrating).

message 20: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments I was just getting caught in that frustrating search web.

Yeah, the search issue has been annoying me all day :(

Abby | 270 comments Kristie wrote: "It seems Good reads is having trouble with the "add book" feature as well as the "search books" feature. This should be interesting (and potentially frustrating)."

I actually just noticed that now when I was trying to add a link but I thought that the problem was on my end.

message 23: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments Lanelle has just asked me "Can we make our own chain or do we have to include someone from our team in the chain?"

I'm assuming there needs to be at least two different members of the team attached to a chain (as you put work together as a team in the rules)?

message 24: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19136 comments Technically, I suppose you can make your own chain, but that does remove the fun (and challenge) of working with your teammates. It would be preferable to have at least two members be a part of the chain, but you wouldn't be disqualified if it was all one person.

I have been putting in the ISBN instead of the title, with no failures.

(Finding ISBN on Amazon)

Vicki | 1538 comments What a great toppler. No book criteria so we can read anything we want but it has to work with our team. I like it!

message 28: by Annerlee (last edited Feb 05, 2021 05:46PM) (new)

Annerlee | 2871 comments EDIT: Oops, sorry - I just read the instructions which make my question obsolete. Sorry everyone...

I suppose if we started with

1. The Book Thief, 2 The Lightning Thief

I could still link from the first book but in the opposite direction with
-1 The Graveyard Book
-2 Graveyard Dust

i.e. even if the books weren''t read in chronological order

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments I still have some of that Toppler Tea.

For those of you newer to the group, one Toppler side event was what we were drinking to stay awake to read. Someone found a vendor on line who made customized blends of tea. We created two different types of tea and set it up with the vendor. I still have some tea bags in my tea jar.

Thanks! I was just looking at them and wondering if they'd still have them. I'm going to check it out.

You created this tea the same time I joined Goodreads. I didn't join this group for another two years. No wonder I didn't know about it!

I was always wondering about the tea references during Topplers. Just ordered a packet of both teas. Crossing fingers that they get here during the toppler!

message 46: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I can't believe they still sell them. And thanks Janice for the explanation :D

message 47: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19136 comments I just ordered as well, but I seem to have had some weird payment issue and I didn't get a confirmation, but my cc says it's there, so... I guess we'll see. Computer glitch?

message 48: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments I have a whole package of Proper Toppler (in bags) and Tipsy Toppler (loose). I must have ordered 2 pgs of each. And I found one tea bag of Chinese Surprise. I'm wondering if they added it as a promo. I've got the kettle on because I need to see if it's still good. They've been in the sealed jar for 6 years.

I hope you get your tea okay Kristie.

message 49: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Our Earl Grey last night was loose leaf that is at least 10 years old (we rarely drink tea, but looking for lots of alternatives while we're dry). I put another spoon in as i thought it would be not be as strong. Nope, sealed jar meant it was still good. That put hairs on our chest. So I hope yours is fine too, Janice.

message 50: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments It is fine. I can really taste the vanilla. I probably should have let it steep a bit longer.
