I am looking for a children's book where a little boy was accidentally drafted into the army (possibly after misbehaving). He is drowning in an oversized uniform. He tried to do the jobs assigned. At some point, an officer tells him that he cannot cry because that is not what soldier's do (or possibly that is what little boys do or possibly what babies do), and each higher level of rank tells him the same thing until they finally realize he is a little boy. He then returns home to behave admirably.

We figured it out....
it was the story of Munro in the book Feiffer's Children by Jules Feiffer.
